I like this blog post about unhelpful ways to think about mental illness, and more helpful ways.

I was very susceptible to the idea of the therapist as the wise healer who knew what I needed, and medication management as a route to that med combo that would make my brain "normal". This led to disillusionment, and made me vulnerable to exploitation.
Like the author of this piece, I wish I'd known how to think of mental illness management as gaining tools and skills to help me function and feel better despite my janky brain.

oh dear Tabitha, I wrote a bloody long reply and I lost it. Thanks for the link, her blog is interesting.
Yes, a perspective like this would have helped me years before I ever sought treatment. On top of the distress and pain of a mood disorder, the panic I felt (and still feel sometimes) that something is WRONG, dreadfully wrong.
The short guide to comparative religions is delightful :)
