In my DBT self study. Obviously, I don't like the whole concept of "wise mind".
But my main problem in understanding right now is understanding the difference between the "what" skill of particating (being at one with your activity) and the "how" skill of one-mindfulness (focusing attention completely on whatever you're doing).
Could anyone who's had DBT experience share with me what I'm missing? Or is it just too close for a mind that doesn't always grasp nuance well.

Dinah,
While I recognized all the phrases you used, I honestly don't remember the particulars. If I have time tonight I'll look through my papers and try to reconstruct that 'era'. take care, judy

Dinah,
I'll try, but mindfulness was never my forte!
I think that the "What" involve more letting the world happen and either watching it or simply being part of it. I see it as more not changing the world, but just joining the world as it is.
The "How" is much more active (how suggests a verb, what suggests a noun). They seem to take more action: Seeing things non-judgementally, focusing on just one thing (and letting the noise in your head have a rest), doing what works.
Both sets of skills apply to attending, describing, and participating. "What" skills tell you what to do. "How" skills tell you how to do it.
...................What................................How
Attend.........Stay with what happens.....Non-judgemental
Describe.......Labeling...........................Focus on one thing
Participate....No self-consciousness......Doing what worksOnly one of the "what" skills can be done at once, but all of the "how" skills can be done together.
Does this help? Ask more questions - it is good of you to make me read this stuff.

I'm going to read that chapter over again. (All this time and I'm still on the core mindfulness chapter.) And I'll ask my therapist about it tomorrow.

I thought more about what you said, and I think I understand. I just need to see if I can retain it in my sieve of a brain. :)

That I understand it, or (heaven forbid) I can apply it. I just know how to summarize stuff from a book. Hopefully, that can help you!
