To echo a question on the meds board....
Has anyone found lasting change through therapy? If so, what type was it? How long did it take?

hi. therapy has definitely helped me. but i think sometimes i have to look backwards to see any progress that i've made, mostly because i'm so busy looking ahead wondering when we're ever going to be done! :-)
lasting change: i'm a much stronger person and i can't account for that. i'm smarter, too. i have an inner strength that i can't account for either. as a result of being believed and unconditionally held in high regard (i'd say "loved" but i've got a male therapist... <grin>), i find i can do the same for other people. i seem to be growing up, which i am doing kicking and fighting... but the more i talk about the crap in my past, the less it controls me and the more i am able to be the adult that i was meant to be.

Hi Dinah,
I've done well with DBT (a kindler and gentler CBT) and interpersonal- I guess my therapist uses a variety. I'm miles behind Terra, but I find I recover quicker from emotional ko's. For me, I've had to spend over a year just on trust issues because of boundary crossings by my ex-shrink and I think that's prevented a lot of progress. But I guess the one thing I've learned is this is a very long process, so I don't think in terms of weeks or months anymore. I find it amazing the things I don't know- how to act in a situation- I think my social skills stopped at 5 years old. I may put on a good show, but I don't truly understand person to person interaction and often get frightened (as evidenced many times here). So a lot of reeducation is going on now too. Anyway hope this wasn't too convoluted. Take care, judy
