Giving up animal protein will be difficult. And I don't care for the crickets I ate once. A friend of mine is more adventurous. My kid, too. The science class sautéed mealworms or something. "They were like rice."

Do you think this is 'it'? I know everyone says the new normal, etc, but it's getting real here. Meanwhile, ice floes melted at a faster rate because high pressure zone was not taken into account.

Well, things are speeding up. Factory farming may lead to avian diseases. The word for bat in Spanish is lovely....murcielego. Bats have been involved in a few of these, even one locally, Hendra Virus.

The covid thing will pass, but the climate won't return to normal. I imagine a series of rolling crises. Given the state of our politics it will be who gets stuck with the blame. Surely the Dominionists will go down in disrepute when it is obvious to where they have led the world? Otherwise it may be fascism.

I've read about Hendra. I'd like to know what makes bats a rich reservoir for viruses. Do you know?

Rolling crisis is a better term. The US will deal with continual waves. We can largely ignore climate change atm, but my hunch is north america will become existentially unstable. I didn't think I'd live to see any of it, but given the rate of change, I might.

All I have heard is that bats have unusual immune systems and can live with many viruses.

Most of these potential pandemics have come through pigs and chickens in factory farming.

I hadn't realized h1n1 flu virus was that deadly.

From wiki "And bingo, here we are." Pigs have been termed the mixing vessel of flu because they can be infected both by avian flu viruses, which rarely directly infect people, and by human viruses. When pigs become simultaneously infected with more than one virus, the viruses can swap genes, producing new variants which can pass to humans and sometimes spread amongst them.[87] "Unlike the situation with birds and humans, we have a situation with pigs and humans where there's a two-way street of exchange of viruses. With pigs it's very much a two-way street."

The world is so crowded with people and animals being very much abused. Are you vegetarian?

No, I'm not a vegetarian, but we eat much less meat than before. We learned how to cook which has been a help.

The Democrats are so contemptuous of the public that I would consider voting for Trump. Not being able to do that I might just go and get drunk instead. Obviously he will attack from the left. How many times does the DNC think they can get away with this?

And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute, Trump said. One minute! And is there a way we can do something, by an injection inside or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so itd be interesting to check that. So, that youre going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me.

You can imagine I'm pretty despondent over our situation. We're not coming back from any of this. Everyone fights all the time.

My only comfort is the state I live in is so blue, and I like what he says and how our governor looks at people and situations.

I don't know if there is reasoning with people. If some of the Michigan protestors lived in NY, would they complain about how the virus burned through the city? That nobody kept them safe?

The protestors in Michigan are angry at the wrong target.

A friend has reassured me there are not as many as I might imagine.

You would be familiar with the Garden of Earthly Delights. I was so impressed I went back the next day to stare at it. This reminds me of the stream of people trying to or not enter hell, the broad path.

You didn't really sound as if you were in shape for this, but being as I am......don't worry, it's only Michigan.

Haha I'm alternately terrified and amused (ok, outraged too).

The guardian has a new interview with Michael Lewis, and I loved this:
Interviewer: "When you have done readings from the book, how have audiences reacted?

Lewis: I never found anyone who said: You are exaggerating the importance of these people. The closest I got to the Trump administration was to talk to Steve Bannon about it. Bannon had this election line: We are going to tear down and destroy the administrative state. I asked him what on earth he meant by that. What would it mean to destroy the Department of Agriculture, say? He didnt really even try to answer. What we are witnessing is a decline in interest in how you fix
other peoples problems.

Yes I did.

A favourite quote about this is from one of the Mosley sisters, could have been Diana, about the jews, in a letter to her sister: 'Much the kindest thing, Darling'.

Brazil is the place to watch for that. All those useless mouths.

I was looking at a photo of people lining up to vote in Baltimore and thought that they looked more and more like inhabitants of the former USSR. Surplus to requirements.
