[Obama] seeks to replace our merit-based society with an entitlement society, Mr. Romney said in a recent speech. In an entitlement society, everyone receives the same or similar rewards, regardless of education, effort and willingness to take risk. That which is earned by some is redistributed to the others. And the only people to enjoy truly disproportionate rewards are the people who do the redistributing the government.
I shall allow myself an extra Christmas drink on the strength of that.

I'm afraid I don't understand. Are you saying that because you believe Mr. Romney considers himself entitled?
Does the Blanfein quote have anything to do with Romney?

Buddy Roemer is an old old favorite of mine. I think I worked for his campaign for governor back when he was a Southern Democrat. I thought it was awful when he wasn't reelected. Particularly awful given the circumstances. But I'll never forget his first gubernatorial race, and his exciting come-from-behind finish to make it into the runoff, and Edwin Edwards withdrawal from the race. Many young adults have that moment where they get a shining glimpse of the future, and the startling possibility that things just might change. I wish I could hold on to that. Buddy Roemer is associated with those feelings in my mind.
He also looked so much like my husband that everyone wondered if they were related. :) It's not so strong a resemblance now they're older, but it's still there.
And I attended a talk he gave in Baton Rouge when he was governor. I was so impressed by his energy and clear thinking.

I have to admit that before I support him fully as I did then, there are a few tough questions I'd have to ask him.
The candidate I'm supporting is Jon Huntsman Jr. He inspires some of those same feelings in me, though I don't agree with him on every position. I'm not sure if I'll actually get a chance to vote for him. It depends on whether he's still in the race by then.
I was a little surprised by Buddy's race, to tell the truth. It was quixotic from the start. I'm also surprised to see him positioned as a conservative. I supported him in the first place because he's truly brilliant, and approaches an idea on its own basis, and not on ideological grounds.

Hearing Broemer speak live was refreshing departure from politics as know them to be. I received the impression he was not hiding but speaking fairly directly.
(I have not heard Huntsman live.)
I might look up that Micky Mantle book. Truth be told, 888 pages on the atomic bomb might be a handful for me. I'd likely never finish, though never say never.

He's an interesting and intelligent man.
I doubt Huntsman could be nearly as good a speaker. That's one of Roemer's strong points. I can't understand why he's not allowed to debate, if he's managed to meet the standards they set.

I imagine he might dominate the debates. I imagine he has a strong ability to drive an agenda.

At his best, he could do very well. He's got a decent sense of humor, as well as style and energy. He follows the best traditions of Southern preaching/political speaking.
