I see they want it on Columbus Day, a holiday of which I was unaware.
Australia Day is also known as Invasion Day, so I have wondered for some time if such a holiday as this would happen on Thanksgiving.
But then I read on Wiki
>It is thought that the first Thanksgiving was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony survive their first brutal winter in New England.[2] The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90 Native Americans.

Sig,
I wish I'd seen this post earlier. I just came back from a holiday in the southwest of the US. I was soaking the cultural history like a sponge in my contact with the First Nations people. It felt intensely spiritual in an almost embarrassingly way. I've only felt this connected emotionally with an other being since I got to spend a day on a research vessel in New England; identifying and counting Humpback whales in Stellwagon Bank, their summer feeding grounds in the Atlantic Ocean.PartlyCloudy

Here's something I copied out for Pat a few years back. You might have read it but perhaps not. I was entranced. I don't know where these Amerindian groups lived.....maybe not too far from central America?

That's from "One River" by Wade Davis.

Maybe that is Columbia?
I seem to recall that range of mountains from the book. If I'm right in that it is a remarkable range, rising something like 20,000ft in 20 miles or something similar.

Oops, I forgot to check on this thread in this barren land - sorry!
I'll do some catching up and be right with you, Sig.

I have signed the petition supporting a National Holiday for Native Americans.
They can have any day as far as I'm concerned. It's the least we can do, and sooner the better.

I don't remember it but dimly recall reading some story about Columbus, although it might have been someone else. Something set in the Carribean? Terrible, anyway.
I signed too. Anyone can. You don't have to be a US citizen.
This is the end of the thread.
