Fascism only ended in Spain in living memory. So when the Madrid train system was bombed and I don't recall how many people died, the population of Madrid turned out and stood in the rain in silent dignified protest, a display that to this day makes me ashamed of the Anglosphere and the way our various countries have handled the terrorist threat.

Cheney says that we're not as safe as we were before President Obama took office.

It's always interesting to hear what Dick Cheney has to say.

I heard today an Obama study centre is being opened or planned for Bandung University in Indonesia.

I'm not sure I agree, but anyway the question should be

'Is the geopolitical situation (especially from Lebanon to Pakistan) better or worse than when the Bush Administration took office?'

Torture is part of it.

Mark Danner is great, and was writing very good stuff before and during the Iraq adventure, about the compliance of the US press in particular.

I hope this isn't uncivil. In our new world torture has been on the table. What is there to be ashamed of?

Really? That is a fascinating idea. I wonder how many ideas people will come up with and act upon due to his influence?
