Conservatism

Posted by Sigismund on October 1, 2007, at 21:47:39

The Australian Government has announced it supports the bombing of Iran.

I'm astonished how quickly and easily people seem to come to conclusions, the consequences of which are entirely unclear.

I think it was Lord Salisbury who said to his first cabinet, 'Above all, Gentlemen, no enthusiasms'.

I would think that anyone to whom "conservatism" meant anything would show a decided distaste for these sorts of intemperate adventures. Well, at least anyone for whom "conservatism" stood for a rejection of radical lunacy. Apparently it can also signify an addiction to militaristic preening...

This also reminds me of a touching post on Juan Cole's blog about a year ago by a young Iranian woman. Addressing a largely American presumed audience, she remarked on the similarities between Ahmadinejad and Bush (religious certainty, a stark, polarized worldview) and asked that we consider that, just as not every American supports what Bush is doing, neither do most Iranians approve of Ahmadinejad's moves on the world stage.

"Bomb Iran" is not a joke, contrary to Senator McCain (and others) riffs on the Beach Boys' "Barbara Ann." It's a desperate attempt to reverse one clear effect of American occupation of Iraq, enhanced regional power for Iran. It's also murder.

They can't have read their WWI?
They remain optimists?
They think anything they do will have the intended effect?
I want what they're taking.
'I have a higher Father' indeed.

Please be sensitive to the feelings of others (such as those who support the bombing of Iran).

But please don't take this personally, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person.

If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, or are interested in alternative ways of expressing yourself, please first see the FAQ:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#enforce

Follow-ups regarding these issues should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration. They, as well as replies to the above post, should of course themselves be civil.

Thanks,

Bob

How would it read if it was like this?

>Please be sensitive to the feelings of others (such as those who support the bombing of the USA)?

I think that's the issue for much of the world....the perception that there is one rule for us and one for them.

'I want to appreciate those of you who wear our nation's uniform for your sacrifice.'
(You could write a book on that one.)

and in the same speech

'In the last four years, more than 50 million people have joined the ranks of the free.'

GWB, Jan 2005.

Now that you mention it, I wasn't astonished either.

I thought I should have been astonished, which isn't really the same thing.
