Paul Keating was the Treasurer and PM of Australia before 1996, and his speech writer was Don Watson.
Some time back Mr Howard was trying to get a preamble to our constitution written. At the Writers Festival, Don Watson was asked what he would write as a preamble to the Australian Constitution if he was asked to do so.
He laughed and said he would rather not have a preamble, but then said something like
'Well, OK.........You know Saturday afternoon in a country town, no one's around, a man in the bar, someone drunk under a tree, nothing's happening, it's just desolate, and in the distance you can hear faintly the sound of the races? That's what I would use as the preamble to the constitution'.
This is the end of the thread.
