If there is no rain then there will be no water for 50,000 farmers by June.

Unfortunately but predictably, this situation is not being used to encourage Australians in cities to live within the limits of our climate, but instead is the occasion for more dams, pipelines, desalination plants and stuff like that. Eventually we will get rainwater tanks, like we used to have in the past and some recycling.

What is it that leads us to demand the right to inflict wounds on ourselves?

Germany before WWI feared encirclement.
By a series of unwise and agressive moves it created the encirclement it feared.
Since the encirclement was there, it precipitated a conflict, sooner rather than later, to win.
That's the pattern for our species.

when i lived in New Mexico (something like 13 inches a year), i watered my orchard and gardens from the acequia (ditch) that came down from our reservoir at the foot of the mountains. and i caught all of the rainwater off of my roof for my flowers and also used greywater from my laundry. i WORKED at conservation and still do.

then i would drive down to Santa Fe for something and see that they were building ONE MORE BIG GOLF COURSE CONCLAVE COMPOUND WHATTHEHELLEVER PLACE FOR THE RICHEST TO LIVE......and the local paper would write editorials about being wise about water usage and the environment and encourage growth???????????? confusing as hell to me.

how hard is this to figure out? kinda like here......:-)

Our leaders said this to us by way of explanation.
'The important thing is that when we're carbon trading beyond Kyoto, that we're trading in a way that is reducing beyond Kyoto, because we're going to meet Kyoto.'
(Why we didn't sign Kyoto.)
and
'long-term aspirational emissions abatement goals and associated gateways to provide a context for commmunity efforts'.
(How we will win the War on Climate Change)

I feel enhanced and empowered.
