Qld politics cause extinction of lungfish ?

Posted by tealady on January 12, 2007, at 18:50:13

Lungfish lived alongside the dinosaurs and members of this group have been around for 300 million years.
http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/s1620397.htm
Due to Queeensland govt politics the lungfish will probably be another extinct species.

I can't work out any real benfits of a dam on the Mary River and I can't fathom how the politicians can justify this river on a cost benefit analysis either..and nor can any of my friends in Qld!

It's the opposite side of politics from Bjelke..and yet with a similar (but even worse do you think ?) definition of progress.
I do recall "progress" under Bjelke.
Strange.. like Russia .. similar politics, no matter who is in charge?

I learnt about lungfish in primary school.
The fish lifts proposed do not work!.. but politic tried to hush that ..

for some background pls read

Some friends of mine said it doesn't matter which side is "in".. and I concur. It seems the same re "progress" at all costs.

When politics doesn't consult and then refuses to listen the people?
when majority of arguments are clearly against?

I guess this IS democracy, right? .. ie govt by the few inflential.. now remind me , how does this differ from non democratic or dictator run govts or states like Russia in Communist times?..
OK I guess I CAN write about it, as can others..and we have a "free speech", and express what I feel (cept not on here!)
but.. it's still govt for a few influential people?
and they still do what they want..

Hi there
We live in the driest continent, our rivers are ruined, climate change is here, worst drought for 100 years, and the best the ALP can do is talk about desalination plants and more dams because they are unwilling to take a lead on this. Australia was more in touch with the needs of the environment 50 years ago when at least city people visited the country and had freshwater tanks. But you/everyone knows all this, hey?
We need independants.

But Dec.. you can name a dam after someone

besides property developers can buy drier unviable farmland.. get dams built on good fertile farmland ..and get the water.. adding value to unviable farmland.. and making a buck :-)

nah...

well I guess not everyone had rainwater tanks 50 years ago..and my oparents just put one in.. mind you it took 3 months before it rained enough to fill it (22500) and it'll only last one week if they used it to water the garden.. but it's a start
I guess you didnt know that many years ago the washine machines had a suds save(well all the types I knew did anyway).. and you used a tub just to save the suds, and they automatically repumped into the machine..all of it, not gravity fed.. and the rest of the wash water we put on our garden.. mostly suds free
Everyone I know in BN area now have to put all the suds on the garden too..as the govt doesn't require the suds save option.. or even know about it. Easy to legislate for.. like the car pollution stuff.
ah, but its easier to build a dam.. and hey it marks a mark to be remembered by.
Must be good to be remebered when a poli.. bit like Hitler?

wow.. thanks Pat.
It's really a last ditch effort, but if enough people actually care enough to try to do something, it's the only chance the lungfish have really. Plus all the other considerations.. like the other species, the flooding of the fertile land (which is in short supply) etc.
and it's not often something comes up where maybe we can make a difference..or maybe I just like to kid myself that it is so...

I sent some emails out via the petiton site and
the email went out with the subject
"Action Alert from Jan".. sigh.. so only one person out of 20 didn't delete it!
I've joined the petitions forum and let them know how the subject could be interpreted. Sometimes the obvious just doesn't strike one.
I did something similar(only worse) once with a uni assignment title(an abbreviation was needed) when younger.
I always stand back and read headings with a mind that is not involved in the topic now.

So if anyone forwards emails via the petition site make your "name" something like "<name> Re lungfish under threat of extinction " or something similar unless people will recognise your name I guess
Maybe sometimes it just feels good if one tries to help... maybe :-)
