Wow my Son gave up his sight and two fingertips in Desert Storm to do this. I'm sure he feels relieved as they called off the War just before he entered Iraq. Love Phillipa

I used to be for capital punishment, but I think I've changed my mind over time. Nothing about whether someone might be innocent or guilty of the most horrendous crimes. It's more that I feel very sad and uneasy to see man taking the life of man, when self defense isn't a factor.
I guess I don't know the situation there well enough to know if self defense was a factor.

Same here. I'm glad his reign of terror is over and he can't hurt people anymore, but I can't be happy that it took his death to bring it about. I just wish there was a better way to get the same result. A way that would make him comprehend why what he did was wrong, and maybe even change an evil man to good. I guess that's just fantasy for now though. I don't envy the lawmakers that have to decide these things.

A bizarre thing I once read (in Utne Reader, a year or two ago), Saddam was apparently into writing melodramatic romance novels as a hobby. Supposedly, at least one was made into a movie. He even wrote one recently while in prison. Not sure how I feel about this.

some of you know that my SIL just came back from Iraq. he told me that you have no idea who the enemy is..at any time......very volatile and scary......i would not want to be an elected/or otherwise official there now.

All of this stuff about getting the Iraqis to do whatever is purely (I'm sure) for domestic US consumption so that when the time comes......
If I was an Iraqi I would want the protection of my tribal group, because it would be the only protection I'd get.
