He has ruled Cuba for 47 consecutive years--outsmarting countless attempts to dethrone him. He has given cuba a 100% literacy rate and world class medical facilities. He has outlasted 9 U.S. presidents. I'm still waiting to see if he outlasts Barbara Walters. I like him--except the fact that he executes his enemies.

I want to get to Cuba and Bolivia while the governments last and before they brick and tile the joint.

You've got a lot of travels on your agenda, Declan.
When do you set sail?

Tell me about Bolivia, Bobby. Some people say it's the most spectacular coumtry they've been to.
I might think about travel more these days, Jost, because the world is getting so much smaller.
I'm thinking of more and more obscure places as a way out, although I draw the line at Guinea-Bissau.
(You should try getting a visa for there).
Maybe the Sahara desert?

nah, I don't like the Sahara at all.. in a drought isn't it?
I've had enough of hot and dry..and is Bolivia safe?.
I know it wasn't years ago, when a friend of mine had a job offer there?I like Castro too.. like Tito too.. same reason.
It's just a pity that it seems to takes strength and a certain ruthless treatment of disagree-ers to hold together countries (like the Balkans or dare I suggest Iraq?) , or to stand up strong against the US..although Castro did alliance with Russia for a bit of aid there:-).. only option really, if it wasn't to be "overwhelmed" maybe?I was thinking of somewhere cooler to visit..and not in a drought..

When I went to Bolivia, we flew into Santa Cruz and changed planes on a plane that was really crowded---I thought they were going to bring their farm animals on board with them. From Santa Cruz, we flew to Cochabamba. I met a couple of guys who were headed to La Paz to go hiking. They said it was a beautiful place. In Cochabamba we took two small planes into a little community called Tambo. It was out in the middle of nowhere. We were building a airplane hanger on a dirt runway. It was pretty but it was in the middle of their winter. Still it was hot during the day but cold at night. while we were there, he flew us to the jungle and we met some natives. they couln't understand us or we them but they sold us some crafts that they made like spears , bow and arrows, and oddly enough pocket books made from some kind of stringy plants. Yes, they were pretty much naked. I remember the beautiful birds we saw and the lush vegetation. In Tambo it was pretty arid and desertlike. Later, we flew back to Cochobamba and went to a wonderful market where all of the local farmers and people came to sell their goods. It was really spectacular. Wonderful produce and trinkets--t-shirts. I can remember wanting to buy some coca leaves---I settled for coca tea.One thing I remember was the food. I never had one meal that wasn't the best thing I'd ever eaten. You could go to a place and have filet mignot(sp?) for a couple of dollars. I never ate better. One thing--if you don't speak spanish--I strongly advise you to go with someone who does and has local connections. I never felt threatened-- but you never know. If you decide to go--I hope your trip is as good as mine was.

If life under Castro was so great, his people wouldn't be risking life and limb to float out of there to Florida.

The Cubans living in Miami want to return only after Castro and his communism is gone.
