Does anyone bring their own bags to the grocery?

Posted by Dinah on June 12, 2006, at 8:18:34

It's something I've long wanted to do, although I recycle many of my bags by using them for other purposes. And we try to find grocery stores who accept the remainder for recycling.

I don't suppose I'd want them for meats or other possibly dripping and contaminate producing groceries. But I see no reason bread and dry goods can't go into a bag I bring for that purpose.

I bring a couple of canvas bags when I remember to.

Do they mind? I have this horrible feeling that it will make them angry.

I bring my own canvas bags, when I remember, which is usually.

Interestingly, they have banned plastic bags in Ireland, well the plastic carrier bags you get in shops anyway, not like sandwich bags. So now in every shop you get paper bags.

Also in Finland you have to actually buy the plastic bags you get in the supermarket, so everyone just tends to recycle their plastic bags that way, or has canvas bags.

Incidentally here in the UK we have THREE trash cans (we actually call them wheelie bins here because they have wheels, suprisingly)

One for recycling, so paper, cans, plastic bottles, and tins go in there

Another for composting waste, such as garden stuff and kitchein scraps which presumably gets composted,

And another for everything else. And then we take our glass bottles to the bottle bank.

And the council takes care of our waste here in the UK, ie the state.

I think it would be a very good idea if everyone recycles. In fact, if I were president I would make it the law.

Hahahaha, it just reminded me of an article here in the papers about how Bree from Desperate housewives put out her wine bottles with the normal trash and didn't recycle them - a crime here in the UK (well not actually, but most people recycle...)
Kind regards

Meri

I think buying the plastic bags is a GREAT idea. I think I'll write my congressman about that one.

I'll try keeping some canvas, or even some old plastic bags, with me. The worse they can do is to tell me that it's against their rules. (I've been told that when I try to stop them from giving me a bag for a single item.)

Actually, I save 5 cents per bag. Whoop di doo!

But it saves me from having to deal with all the plastic bags, and they're easier to carry.

I usually try to buy as many groceries as I can fit into my backpack (If I'm riding my bike to the store) or my backpack + two other bags, if I'm riding the bus. It's amazing how much less crap I buy now that I have to carry it all home without a car. No more soda, for example. the only heavy jugs are milk and juice. Ice cream is bought in pints, everything in quantities I use in a few days (I live alone, mostly).

Lots of people at my store bring their own sacs. They get a discount. 10cents a bag. and they're usually easier to carry. I don't do it, because I usually go on the way home from work, and I don't like to carry around the extra bags everyday.

Funny, in California, we have the same thing, except we can put bottles in the recycle bin too, unless we want our Cash Redemption Value back. :D Recycling isn't as popular in my native Florida, so having three bins kinda made me do a double take when I moved here.

It certainly wouldn't make them angry, they may look at you and make a judgement that you're a "tree hugger" or something. I've had that. But not angry. Those plastic bags cost them money, and they are always pleased to save money! BTW I'm FAR from a "tree hugger", and I've used my own canvas bags before. I haven't in a long time however.

We have grocery stores here in Canada that do not give out bags...you have to bring your own.
