Anyone heard of that nice Vietnamese/Australian boy who will hung in Singapore this weekend? (Possession/transit of a couple of hundred grams of heroin.) Spectacle in the latest theatre of the War on Drugs. Apparently his hangman will say to him just before he does it 'I am sending you to a better place', and it's hard to disagree. Human society/whateveritis fills me with cold fear.

Hi Declan,
I don't get through a day without thinking about this and the Corby case. The real crime will be murder not drug trafficking. This whole thing makes me sick.
And in Shapelle's case, twenty years in a Bali prison may as well be a death sentence.
I think what a person ingests should be their own business. I would like to make an exception for meth but the answer still isn't exorbiant prison sentences or death.
I can't understand why Singapore and Indonesia can't extend other countries (Australia in particular) the courtesy of sending non-violent, foreign, criminals back home. Deport them, don't kill them.

If I was in this situation I would remind myself that the world needs this spectacle to retain a sense of righteousness, that the spectacle has an ancient and venerable tradition existing before the burning of witches in the market square to save decent people. The justification now is of the same sort....there's a drug problem, do you want to see more people suffer? The Singapore Government's preparedness to deal with the people who actually produce all this heroin would prove the bitter point.
In a few hours from now.
