I do worry about the media...

Posted by alexandra_k on July 11, 2005, at 22:41:11

They select what they will show us.
They focus on some things and ignore others.
Give us the information always from an angle (there isn't really any such thing as a completely objective pov).
They suggest certain reasons why...

And the media are funded by...
And the media are linked by...

I used to make a point of bypassing the media. Didn't read newspapers. Didn't watch the news.
But then you have absolutely no idea of what is going on in the world.

It is hard to know which is better sometimes...

I guess it is better to watch / read critically.
Always thinking 'what are they leaving out'
'what are they trying to get us to believe'

I don't know
I don't know

I worry a lot about 'terrorist attacks'.
Its so very easy to blame it on the terrorists
State the rationale for 'terrorist attacks' as some rather strange religious / political beliefs.
So very easy to label certain people / groups of people 'YOU are a terrorist / terrorist organisation'.
Justify torture and so forth.

I think there must be reasons for why people would do such things. I'm not at all sure that we get access to the reasons.
We get access to a scapegoat.
And at the end of the day... It is used to justify violence against a person / group of people.

When innocent people die in the terrorism and the war on terrorism it can be hard to figure out who the real terrorists are.

Sigh.

Why won't the violence stop?

People need their scapegoats...

Why won't the violence stop?

"Where Is The Love?" (Black Eyed Peas)

What's wrong with the world, mama
People livin' like they ain't got no mamas
I think the whole world addicted to the drama
Only attracted to things that'll bring you trauma
Overseas, yeah, we try to stop terrorism
But we still got terrorists here livin'
In the USA, the big CIA
The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK
But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And when you hate then you're bound to get irate, yeah
Madness is what you demonstrate
And that's exactly how anger works and operates
Man, you gotta have love just to set it straight
Take control of your mind and meditate
Let your soul gravitate to the love, y'all, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love
The love, the love

It just ain't the same, always unchanged
New days are strange, is the world insane
If love and peace is so strong
Why are there pieces of love that don't belong
Nations droppin' bombs
Chemical gasses fillin' lungs of little ones
With ongoin' sufferin' as the youth die young
So ask yourself is the lovin' really gone
So I could ask myself really what is goin' wrong
In this world that we livin' in people keep on givin'
in
Makin' wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends
Not respectin' each other, deny thy brother
A war is goin' on but the reason's undercover
The truth is kept secret, it's swept under the rug
If you never know truth then you never know love
Where's the love, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the truth, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the love, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love
The love, the love

I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I'm gettin' older, y'all, people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin'
Selfishness got us followin' our wrong direction
Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids wanna act like what they see in the cinema
Yo', whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness in equality
Instead in spreading love we spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' under
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' down
There's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin' under
Gotta keep my faith alive till love is found

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)

Somebody vandalised a Mosque in Auckland.
Graffiti: 'RIP London'
The Islamic community has been subject to more racism since the terrorist attacks.
They are kiwis too
And their children most definately
It is so sad
So sad for everybody...

They give the people what they want. If it doesn't sell they won't print it.

I worry about the people.

I worry about the people who swallow what is dished out without questioning.

I don't avoid the media. I watch it, read it, follow it. CNN, Fox, BBC, Pravda, Al-Jazeera......

Sigh. Yes. And they get funding from other sources too, of course...

:-)
Yeah. I wish I had Sky (cable equivalent). I'd probably spend half my life on the news and documentary channels.

It's nice to get news from different countries / sources especially. Especially when there is a war on and you can get both countries perspectives.

I know it is more than a little head in the sandish to boycott the media altogether...

If the majority of people can't be trusted to invest in important information, democracy might be doomed.

> If the majority of people can't be trusted to invest in important information, democracy might be doomed.

Yeah. Or at the very least it makes the practice of democracy dubious. Can people be relied on to make informed decisions that are sensibly based on the issues rather than to be swayed by rhetorical force? Is the information really available to them?

Plato... Talked about the idea of an Oligarchy. He thought that the 'common man' didn't know enough about politics to make informed decisions and so people would be especially trained in politics. They would get to make the decisions.

But then that brings up a whole heap of other issues as well...

I worry about a political system when there are two options. When both of those options needs the media to support them in order to conduct an effective election campaign. When both of those options needs the support of businesses in order to influence the media and advertise. I wonder how different their business policies would really be when they rely on business support. I wonder how much there is the mere appearance of choice...

But no system is perfect, I suppose.

Exactly. Include some sources from "the other side", make up your own mind, and you will probably know whats really going on.....

I often visit http://www.aljazeera.com/ as a counterbalance

Sure, they also report from an angle.... but anyway. make up your own mind...
