Christian Science...

Posted by messadivoce on April 10, 2005, at 15:58:01

Okay here's the deal...I am a classical singer and often what we will do is take church singing jobs when they are available. In my particular town there aren't many paid church gigs for singers, so when a friend of mine reccomended me for a job at the Christian Science church, I decided to take it. I have sat through their services once a month for a year now and I have to say I'm very confused as to how they apply their beliefs to everyday life. I have tried to get my head around their logic, but it seems really circular to me, no offense to anyone who is a christian scientist here. I just don't understand how sin, disease and death can be unreal when we witness disease and death in everyone, even devote christian scientists. Does that mean you're a failure at Christian science if you are sick or die? And Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of the religion, died too, so does that mean she's a failure at it?

I myself am protestant and I have to say the belief systems are not close. I would rather be working for a catholic church or any other "traditional" protestant church, but this is what is available to me, and they pay well and the people are nice, so I'm staying for the time being. It's truly just a job to me but I'd like to at least understand how they can apply this religion to their lives. I'd rather not ask the people there all these questions. Is there anyone who can answer my questions? I'd appreciated it.
