supported my search for a specialzed facility for my daughter. She was admitted today to the Ridgeview Institute in Georgia which has a speaciaty program for women with eating and substance abuse problems. She will be in an IOP program and living in a recovery house. Fortunately her insurance covers most of it and she will not have the burden of feeling responsible to her mother or muself. Her employer has been wonderful and guaranteed her a job on her return (they cried and gave her a wonderful send off)--Ga. is a long way from Ohio but we will be involved in some of the family work. Thanks again and the best to all of you fca

One short phone call so far--needed a credit card number for the copay on some refills and a new prescription. She was originally admitted to the alchol treatment track with three session a day focused on eating disorder--she was quite at home with alcoholics--you know the story etc. Yesterday they switched her to the IOP for eating disorders and she freaked--"My god, they all have anorexia and I want to lose weight (she is probably 15 lbs overweight). I don't know what to do, this is not right, I don't have anything in common, they are all younger etc. What I heard was, now I have to look at something I have been avoiding--alcoholics always seemed comfortable with one another--we will see and I will keep you updated--it has only been 48 hours. Thanks

Admittedly, I am anorexic -- although probably considerably OLDER than your daughter -- but I was always struck by how much those of us on both teams had in common. {shrug} I can also understand her feeling, though, since I get very triggered seeing all the thin women in the groups I have gone to. Makes me say one thing: "I *have to* lose some weight..."
Good luck to your daughter, and strength to you. In some ways, I would imagine it's worse for you than it is for her. In others, of course, you'll never know how awful it is for her.
You know what? Mostly I hate eating disorders. I still identify myself as anorexic, and I think it's part of the reason it's so hard for me to recover. I sometimes think if I could just delete that from my self-concept, I could eat much more normally. So far, though, not quite what's happened. (Ever since the insurance company decided to get a refund from my dietician, I've been losing weight. I'm pleased, of course, although I wish it would come off faster... Funny thing, huh?)
Sorry -- I'm having a bad day. Good luck, and take care.

Day four and she is starting to feel more oriented. Remarkably she now says that the ED program triggers feeling that she did not have while dealing with sobriety--her ED started 4-5 years before her alcoholism and perhaps this will be useful for her--she is a bit overwhelmed by the structure of the ED program ( very specific diet, no toilet priveleges for two hours after eating etc)but seems to be immersing herself in as many groups (ED and AA) as possible. Sent her a care package today (clothes no food)and she seems quite optimistic--says it is a beautiful place and has many impaired professionals--she is living in a sober living house while in the ED IOP. Will keep you posted if you are interested fca
