Males w/ eating disorder..

Posted by jay on October 21, 2005, at 0:23:28

I really wish there was more research into this area, as it still seems typical stereotypes of a guy having an Eating Disorder are 'unbecoming'. I take 7 meds, one part to hopefully help this, but isn't quite working well yet.

Sorry...just ranting..

Jay

Hi Jay
What are you taking to help with your ED? (Is what you have anorexia?) Some ADs make you put on weight, cannabis stimulates appetite, but mainly I regret my peremptory response to your post on depression on the books board. So, all the best eh?

You're absolutely right.

I go to an eating disorders support group, and we had a young man in the group for a while -- 16 or 17, I think -- and it was striking how much of his experience mirrored the womens. I think everyone was surprised by this, because there's just a kind of mindset that it's got to be different for men than women, you know? And with all the research I've done about EDs over the years, there's dang little about the ways in which men's experience with them differs from women's.

Then again, there's also not much about eating disorders in adult women, either. The stereotype of EDs only happening to teenage girls is pretty strong, and it seems that's true for the researchers as well.

For what it's worth, I'd be glad to read and offer support or information if you care to write about what's going on for you here.

Hi Jay,

You are so right that there isn't much out there on men with EDs.

Feel free to rant. Maybe some male babblers will be more willing to talk about EDs if you do.

Rant away. Forward any research you find. I'd love to read it.

My EXboyfriend from last year had bulimia, and it's really not as uncommon as people think. Read The Adonnis Complex, which is about men's eating disorders and body image. I think it's ridiculous that the feelings and experiences of men in the area of eating disorders and body image goes unnoticed or unacknowledged--men have the same feelings as women do about this subject, only they are taught through societal norms that to express it as such or accept their feelings about it is wrong/unnatractive/immasculating/ etc!
