What purpose does your ED serve for you?

Posted by Racer on February 26, 2005, at 12:28:10

This is my question this week: what purpose(s) does your eating disordered behavior serve for you?

I guess the follow up could be what other ways are there are serving the same purpose, but I'm not there yet...

Anyone wanna take this one on?

I went through 9 months of very bad bulimia...For the first time at age 32.
This happened after a fiance left me and I realize that my ED was a way to cover up all my emotions from that.
It really made me look at the fact that I was stuffing all my feelings away by bingeing and then purging due to the feelings of guilt.

Hard to put it all into words but the ED was avoidance. Once I dealt with my feelings head on and accept it when I feel down, I was able to stop the binges and the purging.
One person on another board said they liked to think of their ED as their "friend" b/c it brought to light all the problems they had that needed to be dealt with.
I now know exactly what she meant.

I couldn't get therapy b/c I got laid off in November and noticed that once I was out of that miserable job, I was more able to deal with my feelings.
Self-help books have been helping me. I am not totally cured but now will only b/p once every 2 weeks which is SO much better than it was.
I hope to be completely rid of this soon and don't ever, ever want to binge again!!

Best of luck to everybody fighting an ED.
Recovery takes a ton of effort but you are more than worth it!

I like your questions of the week.

It gives me a sense of control. It gives me a sense of ownership in that it's mine and no one can take it away from me. No one knows the numbers but me. I am always doing things for other people but this is MINE.

It also serves as means to self-destruct. I know there are boundaries on Psycho-Babble, but it's no secret that I want to die. I want this to kill me ... but so far it hasn't.

Also, I only restrict which gives me a sense of purity. I also enjoy the buzz I get from restricting.
