rhodiola rosea

Anyone use this? Experiences? I am particularly interested in whether it can be used to help with medication-induced sexual dysfunction, specifically caused by ssris.

Hi
Excellent idea. It is prosexual. It also lightens sleep, and that was the limiting factor. If it had been a bit more short acting I might have managed it. When I took it with deprenyl it was lovely. I dunno what your sleep is like. It's great stuff. Rhodiola +deprenyl was way better than Parnate for me. Except for the sleep.

Crap. My sleep is terrible, has been for about 2 and a half years now. Insomnia is what started me on this terrible journey through meds and herbs.

Unfortunately, you can't predict your path from mine, or Declan's. The journeys each take different turns. The guy who first told me about Rhodiola rosea was preaching it as a wondrous thing indeed. It totally fixed his inability to have restorative sleep. It fixed his insomnia perfectly. I therefore threw caution to the wind, only to discover that I was awake the whole night through. One man's dream drug, the other's failure.

CW, you have to do the experiment, to get correct data. Sorry, mate, but that's the deal.

Yeah CW, one more night without sleep won't be such a big deal. It's an interesting herb in many ways (beta endorphin for one). Just don't buy too much at once.

Rhodiola was horrible for my sleep. I slept badly with it.

I took some along with prozac a few years ago. At first I liked it. It gave some warm motivation and energy. But about a week into it I realized it was giving me bad sexual dysfunction that hadn't been there before I started it.

Last year I tried it again, with prozac and zyprexa. I had a panic attack within 3 days for the first time in my life and ended up in the emergency room thinking I was dying. It was scary. I stopped rhodiola right away and the panic attackes went away in about 36 hours.

They say lower doses are more energizing while higher doses are more relaxing. I think you will have to play with it to see. It gave me too many problems to keep playing.

I went through about 12 months of insomnia.....heavy doses of magnesium glycinate and niacinamide eventually quashed it. Didnt happen overnight though (sorry for the pun).

Ginkgo biloba works on this front. (nm)

Are you still taking the mg and niacinamide? This is month 28 of nightly insomnia for me. I'm on emsam now and it just seems to have gotten worse within the last few nights. Even ambien last night only gave me about 3 hours.

BTW I took gingko for about 3 months last year and it didn't do much sexually for me. I also had a withdrawal reaction when I stopped taking it, which I'd never heard of before but it happened. Very fatigued, shaking, and digestive pain and bleeding for about a week.

No, i'm not taking the mag or niacinamide now. The insomnia was either cured by them or went away of its own accord. Apart from the odd night when anxiety gives me a ropey nights kip, I now sleep rather well.

Sorry I cant be more help.

could you tell me what dose of each and how long you were taking them? also what type of insomnia did you have, i.e. falling asleep, waking often, waking early? I started waking early over two years ago and have not stopped since. Eventually I started having trouble falling asleep too. If there is something that could help me sleep better in the long-term, it'd be a miracle.

For the record, now over 2 years without good sleep, and almost 2 years without sex drive or pleasurable sensation. Sigh...I was relatively happy before this...

Hi,

mine was a restless kind of insomnia. I'd normally get to sleep easily and then wake soon afterward and then spend hours trying to get to sleep again only to find if took hours and then I'd sleep only sporadically. I'd eventually fall asleep properly about 9am and then sleep through till 1pm.

Not sure if the mag and niacinamide cured it or if it was other sups which caused the insomnia which cured itself once I'd stopped taking them (sorry it was a few years ago now so I cant be sure).

Both mag glycinate (from solgar) and niacinamide are relaxing and not expensive so probably worth getting a jar of each and giving em a go.

If I recall the mag glyc were in 400mg tabs (which I ate 4 or 5 of a day and the niacinamide were 500 mg which I took 3 of a day.

I hope you find what you need as insomnia really is one ofthe worst afflictions (along with my nemesis, chronic anxiety).

By the way, its a shame your sex drive is so poor as sex is pretty good at relaxing one into a peaceful sleep!

Glad to hear your now sleeping well :)
I am too now. ..been gradually increasing length and last night I got 10 hrs straight!.. then went back to sleep again!!

Interstingly, I've been taken about 1/4 tab of niacinamide too on and off most days lately .. well over the past few months I think. Although I got the bottles mixed up (really similar) and sometimes I've been taking pantothenic acid . Both were 500mg , and both I was taking 1/4 tablet..
so I've no idea if either helped... LOL :)

I think I need to try magnesium glycinate. what brand do you use. I can't get in in Oz.

It was Solgar brand and isnt labelled as ma glycinate but as Chelated MAgnesium.......I questioned the company, asking them which amino they bound the mag too and they said glycine.

Thanks TJ,
I remember now !!

I just phoned Solgar Oz. I'd thought they'd closed and they do have a recorded message saying they have :).. which is for th best probably.

I could get a way better range of Solgar products.. like the Siberian Ginsend(not just the extract) when we got the range from O'seas products via Health food shops!
Anyway the Magnesium over here wasn't glycinate!.. only citrate. I've got some of that, but it makes me way too alkaline, and I think that really increases anxiety..as well as alklaine burning urine!

here's a link to their site, so ya can see the bad choices we get out here!
http://www.solgar.com.au/New_Products.htm

mostly oxide form, can get citrate.. chelate with another companies means aspartate or glutamate I was told.. both of which are NOt good

That's interesting the only chelated Magnesium I've tried is the Solgar brand, nice to know which amino it's bound too :) I would like to try Magnesium Taurinate, but not easy to find over in the UK, and it seems there's not a lot of Magnesium in the formulas I've seen.
