As your real self? Your name? Was it someone who already knew who you were? By that I mean someone from your private life who found Babble?

As far as I know, no one wants to track you down and find you? These are purely theoretical discussions about what could happen.

I'd think it more likely on a dating site. But even there, I doubt it is all that likely, although what on earth do I know.

I was told "know who you are" in a post on one of the subforums here. I do not clearly understand whether the writer was referring to a real life connection or a previous connection here. No specifics were given and the followups turned to banter. The writer admitted to speculation but that experience was the reason I asked after access to email addresses by forum owner only. I was [and still am] shaken.

Maybe some ppl engage in trying to guess about anothers? Some ppl would just as soon not be guessed about but are impotent to stop it.

You could ask what they mean, but I'd think it was more likely the latter. I think it's only natural to speculate or wonder or be reminded of someone. I've certainly had ideas, although they weren't always correct.

But if you prefer that others not say that they know who you are, you could say that you felt uncomfortable and ask that they not do it.

I expressed my feelings and the encounter defused to a degree. The declaration of speculation was several posts after the initial "know who you are" and "won't tell".

I hope it is pure speculation & I hope the speculation was not near correct. Thinking it over, I cannot see this poster knowing who I am. Even with that, it doesn't mean the thought is not upsetting to read. I try walling off [as best as possible] aspects of life one from another for privacy reasons.

Guarding privacy is getting more and more difficult as I add more and more services in my IT life but I do try.

I couldn't give a rat's tail who knows me(though I fully understand other people's fears--honestly!). However, it should be clearly understood, that "The right's to bear arms" is still legal in my state and anyone foolish enough to unlawfully enter my house or mess with my family could be in for a very rude awakening----or unawakening. R*dn*cks like me don't have to be rational or logical.

One could compose a sizable book on issues related to online safety, privacy and forensics. Linguistic forensics can be as powerful as technical Web forensics. Word patterns can easily be tracked using Google. You might be surprised how many unique misspellings, word-order-patterns or little-used slang phrases you routinely use. Coupled with actual details (married, spouse's line of work, city of residence, etc.) these details can be a real giveaway.

Thing is, a person might not even have an "enemy" at the time of a posting, and thus can't anticipate that, later, some government/employer/spouse/future-spouse's-ex/political-enemy/meth-addled-identity-thief might later have reason to take a forensic interest in one's online activities.

Now here's the sweet part. You might not even know. Let's make an example. You're an outspoken anti-hunger advocate who sometimes suffers "Depression" but declines Big Pharma approaches. You're employed by a small, mom-and-pop shop that lets you bring your dog to work, frown all day and take days off to attend rallies when you want. You're employment position allows you time to become an influential figure in your local democratic party, where you are beginning to make headway toward convincing other dems that "health reform" Wall Street's "First (1/2) Black President" is selling is really just a binding contract with Big Pharma. You are winning support at the state level for land reform that will let farmers regain lost land, where you believe they will grow healthy food in a healthy way that discourages social and dietary situations you believe to be related to depression. Activists from surrounding states are starting to call you for advice and direction. You are a threat to national democrats agenda.

Then one day you notice a job ad on Craigslist. It couldn't fit you better. In fact, an occasional acquaintance e-mailed you just to make sure you saw it. You can't help but apply - it's like they wrote this job description with you in mind. And the PAY! Almost double what you were making. Granted it's 40 hours and no less, but they do offer personal days, right?

The interview is a breeze. It's like they already hired you, and the HR staff is just going through the motions.

Six months later, your dream job turns out to be a dead end. You're mostly sitting in a booth forwarding e-mails about last weeks meetings. The pay is great though. Just no time for politics. And lots of pressure to get to bed on time so you can be at work on time, which means no more late night brainstorming with political allies. And the depression is getting worse. Company insurance pays for pills, though, and you can't get talk therapy without taking the pills, so you bite the bullet, swallow the pill and hope the therapist is a good one.

What happened here? See, it just happens that attorney Got Bucks is also a member of the local Democrat central committee. Remember that one letter you submitted to the local newspaper? It seems you used a phrase in there that's not all that common. And, by the way, you used that same phrase on a mental health discussion board. Along the way, you dropped a few clues about your whereabouts, your politics and your vulnerabilities. Attny. Got Bucks Esq. paid Joe OutofWork Investigator. In return, he got OutofWork Joe's loyalty and the dish on your vulnerabilities -- that post where you said you love you job at a mom-and-pop that gives you time off for politics, but that everybody has their price.

That's just one scenario. We can escalate to a more esoteric version, with international agencies using dubious access to global-scale infotracking systems ostensibly built to protect the world from nuclear terrorists. Use the same overlay of covert political manipulation. Change the facts a bit -- lets make it about a soldier discussing wartime activities. Hmmmm... don't see a lot of those on PB. What's up with that. Why does that particularly security conscious market segment likely to represent the highest incidence-per-capita of recent mental health injuries avoid venues such as this? And by the way, did you notice that Iraq/Afghanistan vets sponsored the free presentation on HULU.com of the expose of how world financial institutions (along with Big Pharma and the fertilizer companies cum munitions -makers that own Big Phara) are consolidating power, led by America's first 1/2 black president -- a man whose first employer was none other than Henry Kissenger?

Okay, the examples drift, but this is about PB. My preference, and what I believe to be the most responsible course of action would be for Robert Hsuing to remove any post at the request of the poster. Instead, he has adopted a "good for the group" philosophy that presumes his ownership of your words once you post. He rarely removes posts, and defends his position at professional gatherings. Mercy is the only real medicine. A more merciful position to managing PB archives would adopt a YouTube approach -- an approach proven workable on a much larger scale than this little corner of Web world. At YouTube, the working orders are "when in doubt, take it out."

Who's to lose? Would you really be harmed worse by someone claiming to be you asking for one of your posts -- under some other name - to be removed, or by information you posted in a weak, depressed moment falling into the hands of employers, political operators, scam artists or sexual predators?

One thing that might reassure people is that no one is really paying attention to most, if not all, of what goes on, on the web, unless it concerns them personally.

There are all sorts of nightmare scenarios-- in the world-- lightning strikes, serial killers, people run over by taxis, explosions of gas lines, etc etc etc-- But the thing we might want to remember is that they don't happen to most people-- Yes, something horrible might-- by some miniscule chance-- happen. But living one's life in the heavy weight of all these terrifying possibilities is the danger that really threatens us-- not the actual things themselves.

Here, on pbabble and on the internet in general, we;re protected by great plethora of information, the millions of posts per day, per minute, one might say-- the unbeliveable vastness and complexity of everyone's words and thoughts. Yes someone might, if they were willing to put in the time, and had the savvy-- and I think, for the average person it takes both great persistence and more savvy than they have-- you can follow links, use programs to follow words patterns, guess about connections among usernames, follow up tidbits of information to some possibly correct ur-source-- but is that going to happen? or it the real danger that we'll scare ourselves and restrict our connections with people who are here-- because of some imagined threat that, in the detailing, becomes so real as to cause us real suffering?

I know people have legitimate concerns-- and need to be reassured as to appropriate precautions. But I also think it's really important that most of us are not being stalked by some determined and dangerous enemy--

I don't think these scary possibilities are as real as the loss to us of our sense of safety in the world that comes from focusing too much on them.

That's the security dilemma. Most people never get robbed. Most people never get burglarized. So why bother with locking the doors?

The vastness of the Web is reassuring, but it is a false reassurance. Ever herded animals? They try to retreat to the reassurance of the herd, but if you single one out, the herd is no protection. The herd in some cases will abandon the targeted member in an attempt to avoid being similarly targeted. That's how lions catch baby water buffalo. Saw it on the discovery channel. I wasn't too moribund with fear to do anything, but I did adjust my posting habits on line. Now I now better anticipate who is listening and tailor my prose to communicate with various Echelons of that hidden audience. Not because of what I saw on Discovery Channel and not entirely because of what I know about roping calves, but because of what I know about security from real life experience. Believe me, I concern "them" very personally.

I believe that Dr Bob tweeting Babble is so that there is more traffic on the site, which can increase revenue by clicks on the ads. It's just marketing plain and simple. I don't care if he tweets my posts, there is nothing really personal in them and if that's what he's doing to market Babble good luck with that. As long as there is no issue with confidentiality for those who do not want their posts tweeted.

Well....what happens to the nettraffic? Dialup? give me a break! that's like driving a Ford Taurus in a Nascar race! maximum speed 85mph! vroom! really fast dialup! get what i'm sayin?

All those Farrai's passed it 7 times, around the golden ring. Well there is DSL, which is roadrunner, need to talk to gobbleduck about some DumpSlownLine's and how to improve their quality...

Even, think about it, If there was a city, called Metroplolis, one tower, one city, think of the huge amount of green, gold, traffic up the the "Oz" of the Green Tower, pretty slow....! need make alot of MetroHighway's for the web!

Because, those Ford's are nice! but i don't want the version's from 1989! 85kbs! fast!
And still of you had a farrari-fast speed's, the car, or the signal is still stuck in traffic, now if their is short cut, blast! it's there! You have to patient with these Taurus speeds.

How to fantacticly use your Dialup (Ford Taurus), you plug your belt into the snap, and talk to you ISP. They will tell you how bad the traffic is in you area, and how much load you may load up you F-line Taurus, now, here is a good example, come here Patty, Patty drives to work every day with her Taurus, she is old school, and prefer's the way her Papa taught her. Patty is sometimes not the polite netdriver on the Taurus level speeds, she had to go to DairyQueen's website, and pick up her breakfast. Next, she slowly, moves her signal which people are sending signal's, move fast patty! I've got to get on and check my email! and your butt is in the way!

Patty doesnt here signal's because she is mean, and really bullhardheaded, even If Lonny/Rob/Al in his Farrari (rarely seen, with Patty, he say's man look at that old model! doenst even have a modem in the contary!

Now the only way, Patty must get to work, now is get on the Highway, she will meet the internet highway very soon, as you can see.....there are faster model's than the old Patty Cakes model, Pat makes a left turn, yet she get's her signal got smashed because she was being a pain in the butt, and someone rammed her butt off the net highway. Pat, she butted her knuckes, but flew off the nethighway! must rebutt, her boot, and get back on the highway. Vince saw this collision, called Al, in his Lamorg-speed warpfast engine, now....this Lamorg-speed can go around anything it want's to the Oz tower, and get instant talk, and hear what smack' is being said on the highway, about Patty's bad additude about being curtious. Rob Vince and Al, get together and think about how to reconstruct this highway, eve, for people who are slow and not nice. Everyone should have there time on, the Oz net, must buy, work, and import info that they may need for preferences.

The only thing about this slow connection, is not enough traffic high ways, to "Metropolis", Al is head of everything. You don't be loyal to him...eee, your stuck in your hut! at home! may send you some mail to say "I'm sorry, Al"

DSL model's are everyday car's, transmissions.

Ford has a new! F10 V10000000 speed, and can take anything off the highway that is being inconvience. The Cyberhighway's. It's big, It's scary, It's fast! even the Farrari's run from this!

Now, When Patty decides to stop dropping by dairyqueen, and go straight to Metrololis Oz, she can get her food right away! even more special! it lasts longer! Plus that means more fuel, for her car signal to get back home safely.

Now, we need to see, the new Industrial CyberIndustry will come of age.

Thank you for your time. Sincererly

Here's a link to a site that might open some eyes here: http://www.pipl.com/username/

A lot of dr.bob site URLs come up on the first search of many babbler usernames.

If one happens to know real life identity of any babbler they can then find multiple sources of information about that person through the pipl site. Connecting those dots grows easier with technology. Google indexing could be viewed as a blessing or as a curse or both to some people.

As Dr. Bob has said "OTOH, if @tom tweets identifying information and Tom posts the same identifying information, then @dick might connect the dots."
