How come everyone is jumping to defend Verne?

Posted by Deneb on July 6, 2009, at 20:57:25

Where were my supporters when I got blocked? I also never attacked anyone.

I am upset.

Me too.

You are absolutely right.

I am sure that you have the support of the majority of the people here. No one could argue that Verne's post was civil towards you. It wasn't. I think there is something about human nature to root for the underdog - someone who is a sympathetic character in the drama of life.

Try not to buy-in to the drama. Real life doesn't have to be a drama. The irony is that if the post were written by someone who just showed up one day, he would be called a troll.

From Wiki:

"In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.[2]"

You are not a troll.

Hi, Deneb.

I 've been trying not to get too involved in these discussions about blocks, because everyone's emotions are so intense and things can be said -- or felt-- that send ripples through the rest of my babble experience.

So I didn't say anything in the prior thread-- but just to assure you, there are many who care about you and are concerned about your being hurt-- Try to focus on that, rather than on people's concern for Verne.

I think people can care about two people-- both you and Verne-- without having it diminish their caring about either. If you see what I mean. That is-- they can be distressed about the length of Verne's block-- especially because there are so many hurt feelings about blocks already-- And at the same time, they can be concerned about your feelings.

I understand your feelings about the discussion-- Because the issue of long blocks is so painful for everyone-- it's the length of the block, rather than the exchange that provoked it-- that people are focusing on. So they seem to care about Verne and not on the effect on you of his post. I don't think it means they don't care about you, though-- it's just that blocks are such a raw issue here.

I hope you can take comfort in the thought that there are a lot of people here who do care about you and know what you're struggling with-- and support you--

and take something from that-- that's what really matters.

I'm trying to do the same in a situation myself-- and I know it's always a struggle-- but it's a good struggle to keep on turning to-- because over time, you'll get better at it.

As I stated in my post on the blocked verne post. I think it was nice that you told him you forgave him.

For me, I agree with Nadezda, we support you both. I would have been hurt by what verne said, by the length of time it took Admin to do anything about it but that said I object to Dr. Bob stating it was unfortunate we did nothing about it. He implies a power we simply don't have.

So don't feel unsupported. You are being very supported. There are just two sides here, sorry it hurt you. But I admire your forgiving nature in this situation. Good for you.

I'm not saying that what Verne said about you was OK - of course you aren't a troll!! You are a lovely person with expressive, deep emotions. Those are wonderful qualities.

My point is simply that no one should be blocked for one year.

Of course being the victim of name calling can be hurtful! I'm so sorry that your feelings have been hurt. And I'm sorry that the fall out above is hurting you too.

Please understand that the activity related to Verne's block really is unrelated to you. It's all about the unfairless of long blocks - something we've been fighting here for YEARS! This is just the latest example of long blocks.

Oops, I just read through the archives and I did have supporters. My bad.

I think blocks are too long too. Anything longer than a month and the person forgets what they are blocked for.

Right off topic - want to know about 'my bad'

~ ~ I support you Deneb. And I agree with the big hubub being about long blocks.

Nobody deserves to be attacked.

But I have a different question:
You said "My bad"

My son is 25 & I've heard him say that & some of his friends. Does this saying come from a TV show or something? Does anyone know where this saying comes from? (I don't have TV)

I've been wondering that myself. I think I first heard it nearly 10 years ago from a parent of teenagers. It still strikes my ear as odd. Not much tv here either.

HEY - I just thought to check on Google & they say other things also, but this seems to be the main source of the saying:

" 'My bad' came into widespread popular use in the mid to late-1990s in the USA via the 1995 movie Clueless. This starred Alicia Silverstone and contains what seems to have been the first use of the phrase in the mainstream media. The 1994 'Green revision pages' for the movie script has a scene with Alicia Silverstone's character learning to drive:

"Cher swerves - to avoid killing a person on a bicycle. Cher: Whoops, my bad." "

This is the end of the thread.
