OK so this is real bad, but it a start I s'pose

Posted by muffled on January 16, 2009, at 12:17:17

But what I was trying to convey, is somehow a way to help people understand blocks are not punitive.
To maybe have others understand WHY some stuff just can't be posted here. Its all about feeling safe.
I wish it could be worked out somehow...

This a mental health board and is meant to be a safe place for all. That includes you.
That being said, only certain behaviours can be accepted here in order to maintain the safe feeling for all that is so important.
Blocking is not meant to create a feeling of being punished or ostracised, this is meant to be a place if support, up to a point only of course.
Blocking may be necessary to maintain safety overall.
If you are in a place of crisis, this unfortunately is NOT the place to find support, there needs to be IRL supports in place.
We would LOVE to support you in crisis, because so many of us understand, but it cuases many ripple effects and often ends up cuasing a great deal of trouble for the many that are here. So sadly, this is just not the place for this.
If there is nowhere that you can think of IRL to turn, try your local crisis line, often listed in the front of the phone book. Or if you are in danger, please call 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency room.(or insert a link to a good crisis page)
This is in order to maintain the safety of this place for ALL, including yourself.
This is a place for hurting people disruptions are very hard to the many that are here.
You contributions valued here and hopefully we will see you back when you have been able to settle some.
Please take care and seek IRL support.

Oh crude effort, but I wished there could be an easier way....

Define 'safe' (nm)

Aren't there ways to post here, within the guidelines, when we are in crisis??

I would hope so.

What stuff, Who's stuff are you talking about?

> This a mental health board and is meant to be a safe place for all. That includes you.

Who is the "you" you are referring to? Since there were only very few of us blocked when this was posted, is this talking TO me?

> That being said, only certain behaviours can be accepted here in order to maintain the safe feeling for all that is so important.

> If you are in a place of crisis, this unfortunately is NOT the place to find support, there needs to be IRL supports in place.

I thought this was suppose to be a support board, many of us don't have the IRL supports, if we did, why would we come here for help?
Maybe in "an ideal world" all people would have IRL support.

> We would LOVE to support you in crisis, because so many of us understand, but it cuases many ripple effects and often ends up cuasing a great deal of trouble for the many that are here.

Again, who is the person you are referring to? Who is causing ripple effects and causing a great deal of trouble for the many that are hear? Is this directed towards me?

> This is in order to maintain the safety of this place for ALL, including yourself.

Again who are you referring to?

> This is a place for hurting people disruptions are very hard to the many that are here.

So who is making the disruptions you are referring to?

> You contributions valued here and hopefully we will see you back when you have been able to settle some.

So who is unsettled here?

> Please take care and seek IRL support.

So is this saying that the posters should go away from Babble and seek IRL support instead? Who should take care and seek IRL support?
I would like to know WHO the blocked poster is that you keep referring to.

I know if i was the blocked poster talked about here, I would be feeling very put down and not supported.

ummm, I thought there was an easier way when a poster feels these thing towards another poster's post, was to use the notifications button and not to post it on the boards, as it could lead to those posters being discussed, feeling put down. I think that this is a good rule, and would lead to less problems. Maybe the rules have changed???

Oh, I just read the rules again, here is a snippet of them I found. hmmmmmm.

Please don't be sarcastic, treat injury or death lightly, suggest that others harm (or use this site to exchange information that could be used to harm) themselves or others, jump to conclusions about others, post anything that could lead others to feel accused or put down,

So am I reading the rules wrong? I must be, I was told by a deputy that there wasn't nothing uncivil about this post. So educate me, then, is it just my perception that this post is about me? Why am I feeling putdown, is it all my imagination? Am I just assuming this post is about me, I mean who is the YOU?
There were only so many of us blocked while this post was posted. Who is the YOU? I would like some clarifications.... Thanks.

I mean, if this message was coming from Dr. Bob or the deputies, wouldn't the message been directed toward everyone, instead of a YOU?

Wouldn't the message be taken differently?

Oh bless you SSSS.
I was just wishing babble could be w/o conflict thats all.
But I guess it can't for some reason, so thats why I am seldom here.
Yes you and I have seemed to have had conflict, but hopefully that can be let go.
I just find it hard to be here.
I do 'peek' from time to time, so maybe I will see you post.
So no, SSSS it was NOT directed at you, honestly.
I have nothing to lose in being honest, cuz I am no longer attached here.
What I really feel right now is sadness for you SSSS.
I just kinda glanced at the posts above and didn't really read them, but I got the sense of anger.
I hope things are going OK with your new T. Maybe I will check psychology.
Its a rough road your on. I hope you can reach out to IRL supports thru this.
Remember, its a ROAD, maybe this part is hard, but it will get better ahead. Its hard, but it can be done.
There is much that is good in you.
And much pain.
I'm so sorry.
Stuff shouldn't happen but it does and I'm sorry.
Please be safe and take care.
FWIW I wish you well.
Muffled

OK, I was brave.
Read it again.
Not too bad. Was OK.

Oh, so what the 'you' referred to, was I was thinking of a 'blurb' for the deps to put with their 'block' message that would be kinder or maybe mitigate the pain of the block, or make it safer somehow.
Thats why it is in a paragraph by itself. Cuz it was meant to be a blurb.
I was hoping maybe others had an idea of what might be helpful to hear when blocked.
Cuz I been blocked and the sudden muzzling was hard. Plus alot of other stuff.
I may have had you in mind, cuz I was worried about you, but I was thinking in a general sense w/the blurb.
A blurb that would be good for ALL.
I was thinking about how I felt when blocked, and trying to think what might have somehow made it easier for me.
So while you were in my mind, this blurb I wrote was more about me in most ways.
I included stuff my T had on her message machine years ago.
It was about me wishing babble could work better.
Wishing blocks didn't hurt so bad.
Cuz there's many good people here.
I wish you well on your journey.
M

I have refrained from entering this controversy, and I'm probably going to regret it now. I also hope what I'm about to post is not uncivil.

But I have to agree with Muffled. Blocks, as far as I can tell, are meant to prevent people from feeling "accused or put down." They aren't meant to make the blocked person feel accused or put down at all. They're meant to keep this community safe for as many people as possible.

It really sucks, but is inevitable, I think that one person's ability to express their feelings conflicts with others' feelings of safety. That's a conflict that occurs in any diverse community where people attempt to coexist, not just Babble. Even in the U.S., where free speech is usually sacred, certain forms of speech aren't protected absolutely because they can threaten others' welfare.

Not necessarily that they *do*--just that the imperfect humans who try to enforce the rules feel that they *can.*

Usually the rules (or laws) try to protect the welfare of many over the feelings of a few. That isn't necessarily right. But neither is the alternative. And in situations like this I don't think there is any absolute right or wrong. Just people trying to meet their responsibilities as they understand them.

It really sucks that so many people are upset and feel punished by these blocks and PBCs. I wish it were otherwise.

Sometimes when I visit these threads I feel like a little kid with parents who fight. I want to say "stop!" so that my safe space can be peaceful again. But I know there are many hurt feelings involved and these issues need to be worked through. I'd just like us all to remember how important Babble is to us and that the important thing is that it survives and continues to be a safe, supportive place. It can't be safe and supportive for everyone, all the time, because people's needs conflict. That is just how it is in a diverse community.

Peace to everyone.
