Stop f*ck*ng with us Bob...

Posted by Toph on October 6, 2007, at 23:11:59

you know that this style sucks. No one can find the original posts. So why screw around with us -so that we quit asking for improvements? Is your squished face, similar to this format, also meant to further insult us?

please move posts back over to the left.........

this center stuff is quite confusing to me
I hope you will
thanks,

Something different must be happening on my screen to yours. Why can't you find the original posts? Mine are all in a straight line as they always are, they're just been moved to the centre. Surely something else must have happened for you to be unable to find the posts?

The posts are all centered, not justified with follow-up posts indented. There is no way to distinguish a new thread from replies, Q.

Well how come I can see them then! What I don't understand is how you can't spot the indent?! Just follow the line from the bottom up until it splits away and forms an indent. I am understanding this right aren't I? In your window, the original posts *are* marked by indents? They are *not* justified? So why can't you just use the indents as frames of reference instead of the left hand line?

Is this one of those mind games? Where people who think they know left from right really have no sense of direction? They just use local frames of reference. While people who know that there really is no left or right aren't bothered when these artificial and relative frames of reference are removed? I wonder what it is I do see? Emptiness?

Relative direction
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Left and right" redirects here. For the libertarian journal edited by Murray N. Rothbard, see Left and Right: A Journal of Libertarian Thought.

A right-handed Cartesian coordinate system, illustrating the x (right-left), y (forward-backward) and z (up-down) axes relative to a human being. In this illustration, right, up and forward are positive vectors, while left, down and backward are negative vectors. Left and right are defined from the model's perspective, rather than the viewer's.

The most common relative directions are left, right, forward, backward, up, and down.

No absolute direction corresponds to any of the relative directions. This is a consequence of the translational invariance of the laws of physics: nature, loosely speaking, behaves the same no matter what direction one moves. As demonstrated by the Michelson-Morley null result, there is no absolute inertial frame of reference.

There are definite relationships between the relative directions, however. Left and right, forward and backward, and up and down are three complementary pairs orthogonal to each other. If you climb a rope one meter up, you will have moved negative one meter down. Furthermore, you will not have moved left or right at all, nor forward or backward. One must mind the geometry of his environment when using relative direction to express motion, however. For example, if you continue walking forward until you have almost circumnavigated the Earth, you will expend much effort only to move backward slightly. This is because, on Earth, we use a spherical coordinate system wherein the direction vectors depend on position.

The right-hand rule is one common way to relate the three principal directions. (See below to decide which is your right hand.) For many years a fundamental question in physics was whether a left-hand rule would be equivalent. Many natural structures, including our own bodies, follow a certain handedness, but it was widely assumed that the nature did not distinguish the two possibilities. This changed with the discovery of CP violation in particle physics. If you magnetize a sample of cobalt-60 atoms so that they spin counterclockwise around some axis, the beta radiation resulting from their nuclear decay will be preferentially directed opposite that axis. Since counterclockwise may be defined in terms of up, forward, and right, this experiment unambiguously differentiates left from right using only natural elements: If they were reversed, or the atoms spun clockwise, the radiation would follow the spin axis instead of being opposite to it.

This definition of left and right is unwieldy. In practice, the meaning of relative direction words is conveyed through tradition, acculturation, education, and direct reference.

One common definition of up and down uses gravity and the planet Earth as a frame of reference. Since there is a very noticeable force of gravity acting between the Earth and any other nearby object, down is defined as that direction which an object moves in reference to the Earth when the object is left to fall freely. Up is then defined as the opposite direction of down. Another common definition uses a human body, standing upright, as a frame of reference. In that case, up is defined as the direction from feet to head, perpendicular to the surface of the Earth.

Forward and backward may be defined by referring to an object or person's motion. Forward is defined as the direction in which the object is moving. Backward is then defined as the opposite of forward. Alternately, forward may be the direction pointed by the observer's nose, defining backward as the direction from the nose to the sagittal border in the observer's skull.

The terms left and right are derived from the fact that some 90% of the population use the hand of the same side of their body for writing and other manual tasks. Through cognate of the word right in the meaning correct or good, the side with the hand most used was defined as the right side. The word left comes from the Old English lyft, meaning weak. This dichotomy can also be seen in the words dextrous and sinister, from the Latin words for right and left. In order to figure out which hand is which you will need a clock, a compass, and the sun. Face the sun and check the compass. Before noon, the compass points to your left hand. After noon, it points to your right.

In most people, the heart is to the left of the body's center line and the liver is to the right.

[edit] Example

In this diagram, showing a road with right-hand traffic, the red car is to the left of the blue car. The blue car is, therefore, on the right-hand side. Should the blue car move backward, it would reach the position of the yellow car, causing an accident. For the red car to be where the green car is, it would have to move forward.

The lane containing the green and red cars is the left lane, the lane with the yellow and blue cars is the right lane.

[edit] Left/right confusion

Left/right confusion is the difficulty some people have in distinguishing the difference between the directions left and right. Dyslexia is one of several conditions that affects a person's ability to quickly and easily consciously realise the difference.

This seems to shed some light on the problem; a different way of looking at the world. I'm still surprised that you need to look at every single piece of popcorn to find the pink one, or more specifically, every single post to spot the indent.
__________________________________________________

Possible effects in humans on thinking

There are many theories on how being left-handed affects the way a person thinks. One theory divides left- and right-handed thinkers into two camps: visual simultaneous vs. linear sequential.[35][36][37][38]

According to this theory, right-handed people are thought to process information using a "linear sequential" method in which one thread must complete its processing before the next thread can be started.

Left-handed persons are thought to process information using a "visual simultaneous" method in which several threads can be processed simultaneously. Another way to view this is such: Suppose there were one thousand pieces of popcorn and one of them was colored pink. The right-handed person — using the linear sequential processing style — would look at the popcorn one at a time until they encountered the pink one. The left-handed person would spread out the pieces of popcorn and visually look at all of them to find the one that was pink. A side effect of these differing styles of processing is that right handed persons need to complete one task before they can start the next. Left-handed people, by contrast, are capable and comfortable switching between tasks. This seems to suggest that left-handed people have an excellent ability to multi-task, and anecdotal evidence suggests that there are more creative stems due to this ability to multi-task.

Right-handed people process information using "analysis", which is the method of solving a problem by breaking it down to its pieces and analyzing the pieces one at a time. By contrast, left-handed people process information using "synthesis", which is the method of solving a problem by looking at the whole and trying to use pattern-matching to solve the problem. [39]

The hypothesis that left-handed people are predisposed to visual-based thought has been validated by a variety of evidence. In the 2004 book Brains that work a little bit differently[40], researchers Allen D. Bragdon and David Gamon, Ph.D., briefly described some of the current research on handedness and its significance. "Handedness researchers Coren and Clare Porac have shown that left-handed university students are more likely to major in visually-based, as opposed to language-based subjects. Another sample of 103 art students found an astounding 47 percent were left- or mixed-handed." [page 76]

Ultimately, being left-handed is not an all-or-nothing situation. The processing styles operate on a continuum where some people are more visual-simultaneous and others are more linear-sequential.

Oh, and whatever you do, do not look at the image upside down! See, Dr. Bob can be a little angel, or a complete devil, it all depends on your perspective. Oh never mind! You probably wouldn't be able to see anything even if you did. But don't believe something's not there just because you can't see it.

Do you feel disorientated?! I guess most people must rely on straight lines for their reference points. I feel quite at home. I was just thinking how round and circular I am, so no wonder I feel most balanced at the centre.

My preview appears on the left. I don't know what's happening to your preview box. Can you describe it in more detail?

Hmmm, can one be oval? Like a cat's eye? The centre of gravity is still the same I think? My geometry fails me.

In some but not all browsers, the posts are lined up justified in the center, with no indentations for followups. So that it is indeed hard to see which posts are followups in threads.

Other browsers show everthing moved a few paces to the right, but with followup posts indented a few spaces from the first post in a thread. So that it doesn't look too much different than before, except moved a bit towards the center. But evenly moved.

This is very clearly not what Dr. Bob intended, since different browsers are handling it differently. If it was what he wanted, all browsers would be handling it the same.

I'm *sure* he will fix this. I sent him an email yesterday and have not gotten a reply.

Almost true. The main board, the medication board, is as it always was. Somehow, when he deleted some of the things he deleted, he also deleted formatting instructions. If it was purely a browser thing, the main board would also be affected, and it wasn't. (I use IE.)

I truly dislike the loss of the old-style formatting.

Oh, I know it's on Dr. Bob's end. :)

It's just that since some people are seeing fairly organized boards - depending on what browser they're using, they're having trouble figuring out what other people are talking about.

But I'm sure he'll fix it, whatever it is.
