layout of main pages

Posted by Dr. Bob on September 23, 2007, at 2:52:59

Hi, everyone,

I think the main pages of the boards are getting kind of cluttered, so I'd like to propose revising the layout a little. How about something like this:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/babbler.html

or, without frames:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/indexr.html

So just mainly the links would be consolidated?

Seems ok with me.

Or am I missing something?

Wait! You'd have to follow a link to go to archives?

I couldn't tell any difference because it made my screen on my Palm autoscroll at warp speed in the wrong direction.

I think there should be links to the boards at the bottom of the page. I don't really care if there are links at the top of the page. Usually I read the boards from top to bottom and then I click on a link to go to another board.

All the other changes I'm OK with.

Oops, I just noticed you also got rid of the link to psychopharmacology tips. I think that should remain, where would we go to find that resource?

Actually, to tell you the truth, I don't like change, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I like it just fine - you've eliminated the massive listing of archives at the top by using a link instead, right?

Except....I get a stark, white background for the list of current threads and it's hard on the eyes..the soothing beige is better, IMO.

Some links are missing. Where's the Babbleometer?

I noticed you updated the copyright. LOL You finally realized it's 2007? LOL

That's a point. I never use the top links either. Just the bottom ones.

Could you just have a "Home" link that would take you to an info page where all other links and info as to what each board is meant for etc is on?
Just a thot.
Then there would be room at the top of each board page for day to day stuff, less clutter, bigger ads if necc., bigger pics! or notifications/alerts of wassup on babble as needed?
"home link" top and bottom....

Two separate columns at once? This is frames. Seriously I find this very confusing for my confused mind. Phillipa

This way, there's a "more information" page for each board, for information specific to that board, including the archives, and a "general information" page for Babble as a whole....

Weird! All the way to the bottom? With frames or without or both?

Has Babble been compatible with a Palm so far?

OK, that wouldn't be too hard to change...

Hmm, the idea was to highlight the current threads with a contrasting color. Something other than white? Or keep the beige for that and use something different for the rest of the background?

Thanks for all the input!

fine, too, if the rest is a subdued color, not jarring

not sure why it's important to highlight them? pleasing to the eye on the page? or.... ?

thanks for all your work on this :-)

PLEASE don't go to white. The creamy yellow is much better on the eyes.

Also, I'm working on "previews" of posts. For example, go to this thread:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20070919/msgs/783892.html

and scroll down to Thread. If you move your cursor over the link to the post by Cyclothymic on 9/16/07, it should show you the beginning of that post...

Maybe I'm missing it, but I don't see "Extras". Extras, IMNSHO, is a vital feature.

"More information" links to "general information", at:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/general.html

Which includes the Extras. It wasn't easy to find?

Just some places, lotsa places , just have a HOME board, and thats where you go in one click. It has *all* the info links. Like site map etc.
Then if you had all the extraneous stuff on the single 'home' page it would be simpler on the board pages.
I rarely look at the top of board pages cuz your right, there's alot crap up there.
I DO always look as I scroll on down to see who's in chat.
I also think we need to better address board definitions.
I also like that there is some room for flexibility on the boards inasmuch as I do not have time to go board to board. So I tend to just stick with 1 or 2 primarily.
My thots.

That was with frames, though I didn't realize it because frames don't work with Blazer, the browser it came with. I've set it to frames in the past to see if it would do anything different, and it never did that before. I don't know why it did that this time, except maybe that my Palm is trying to drive me insane now. ;)

It's been compatible so far with one complaint. Blazer seems to support only one open window, so when I click on a post, it overwrites my view of the board. Then I have to back up or click my bookmark again to get back to the board after reading the thread. When I do that, I lose all of the "new" flags. I can use the previous new thingy one time, but after that I'm on my own to try to spot new posts. That's aggravating, and I don't have a solution except maybe to find a different browser someday.

Maybe that could solve my Palm problem with identifying new posts if the highlights could stick around for a bit even after refreshing the page. Maybe for 24 hours?

Does it do it without frames? And what does it do at other sites that use frames?

It would be a pain, but if you log out after you read a board, then when you come back you should be able to keep the same posts flagged if you log back in after you read each thread (and before each time you return to the main page).

> Maybe that could solve my Palm problem with identifying new posts if the highlights could stick around for a bit even after refreshing the page. Maybe for 24 hours?

I don't know, that might throw off people who visit more than once a day...

Thanks for the feedback. I moved the links to the boards to the bottom of the page. And kept the soothing creamy beige yellow around the current posts, but made the rest of the background a little darker. How's that?

I'm sorry if someone else has already brought this up, but I just don't have time to read through this entire post right now.

How about having the newest posts on top, instead of at the bottom? I usually read from bottom to top, so I can see anything new.

Just my two cents worth, and cheap at half the price!

Dr. Bob,

Sorry, but UGH! I really like the background color the way it is. I do not like the two tone look. Too "messy."

One more thing..... » Dr. Bob

In reply to layout of main pages, posted by Dr. Bob on September 23, 2007, at 2:52:59

Dr. Bob,

I think you could even eliminate that second paragragh. But please set up a "HOME" page where you have the links to the Babblemeter and all the other things. And put that link to HOME either at the top left of each page or in all caps at the bottom.

The HOME page would be a great place to put how to get in touch with you and the deputies. And please make that page accessible even when a person can't sign in because of password or name problems.

Thanks!
