In reply to Re: Bob Calling Cops????, posted by Dinah on January 25, 2007, at 10:25:15

My sense is that we can trust Bob enough to think that he called the police in a situation where calling the police was appropriate.

If something like that had happened to me, I think I wouldn't want it to be discussed now. Sometimes even when a discussion is framed in a sympathetic way, it can be disruptive to the person being discussed.

So unless there were some awfully pressing reason for bringing it up-- as opposed I guess to asking the question more abstractly-- and here I contradict myself somewhat-- but I'm sure I could make the appropriate distinctions if someone wants me to-- but I'll assume no one does-- it might be more helpful to discuss the concerns outside a specific person's experiences. Maybe if there's a hypothetical context, or a specific concern about the future, that would be better than bringing up the actual person. Esp. since, as Dinah says, it was a long time ago.

What it reminds me yet again is that it's awfully hard to formulate rules that can be applied in a blanket way-- because situations differ so much. Bob does it remarkably well. To me, the question of favoritism falls somewhat under this category: do we want a "one-size-fits-all' set of rules, which can be fairer in some ways, or a degree of flexibility in interpreting the rules (not that this could be avoided), which will feel unfair, and sometimes arbitrary in yet another way (assuming that the "one-size" type of enforcement will also seem arbitrary.)

I mean he HAS to act as a psychiatrist to preserve mental health of people participating here, but he seems not to care very much.

Is Jeroen well?.

Can you give a reason for calling the police -if you did so?.

I certainly don't speak for Dr. Bob. He did admit in a post he notified the police some time ago concerning Jeroen. I suggest you do an archive search. It might shed some light on the situation. Whether you agree or disagree with Dr. Bob's methods, I do think he has our best interests at heart.

Clearly something extreme and out of the ordinary happened. I would bet that most of us are not in any danger of having the police called on us, no matter how many Psychobabble rules, such as civility rules, we happen to break. Breaking civility or babble rules isn't against the law. Even rudeness isn't against the law, though it's unpleasant. Forgetting to use proper quotes on books, accidently listing an online pharmacy, discussing your marijuana usage back in college, posting under multiple names, name-calling- none of that behavior should result in any police action. Those aren't CRIMINAL offenses. The most terrible behavior on babble should ultimately result in being blocked, at worst-which isn't against the law, and couldn't possibly go on any police record. Unless they are threatening others with violence, setting up an illegal drug laboratory, engaging in identity theft, soliciting minors, etc- I think most people can take a deep breath and trust things are ok and in order.

This is a good point though not anything I didn't think of but if we jump to the conclusion this is true then we could lead the poster to feel accused and put down and that would not be civil ...That is why I think many of us would like Dr Bob to say yes or no on the name calling.

Oh boy. Maybe this wasn't worded well or thought out properly. What I wanted to express is that I think the average poster is pretty secure from police action, and that police are likely only contacted in extreme and unusual circumstances-not for breaking babble rules. My sincerest apologies if anyone feels accused in any way because of what I wrote. At this point I have already long been thinking abstractly, no longer about the original post which led to the discussion. I have no more idea about that than anyone else, and do not wish to speculate about it. Thank you for clarifying your line of thinking for me, Fallen4myT. The discussion makes more sense to me now, and again, I hope I did not cause anyone to feel accused. Your points are enlightening.

I do not feel you made any assumptions or any of that..sorry .....I mean in general we are not to assume so for me..thats why I want Dr Bob to weigh in on this. I have been here MANY years..and no cops here ...but one has to wonder whats up ..and I have to beleive what the poster said (by civil rules I think?) till I am shown otherwise. Dr Bob did not say to that poster he didnt do it for name calling...but he did say he did report that person a year ago....as it didnt reply to the WHOLE post ...I hope for clarification...But to ME nobody has been uncivil...I hope this makes sense :)

He can't post the URL because that would be uncivil under site guidelines.

Dr. Bob won't talk about posters, because he just wouldn't do that.

The police are not called for violation of site civility guidelines.
