Need advice

Posted by TexasChic on July 22, 2006, at 22:08:52

A fellow babbler posted that she was contemplating suicide and got an answering machine when she called a hotline. So I googled some suicide hotlines in her area and posted them for her. She called one of them and the cops came out and got her! The person on the hotline had said they were going to send a social worker out to talk to her. She ended up spending 3 hours in the ER, only to be released and made to walk home at 3AM in a bad neighbohood! I feel terrible about this. What else could I have done? I just don't know how to handle these situations, but I can't stand by and do nothing. I know its probably been said many times before, but I would appreciate it if someone told me what is the correct way to handle this?

personal information should be avoided.
it is only up to her/him to detail a terrible time.

I think you did the right thing. You're not to blame for the outcome. The fact that she contacted a hotline shows help was needed, and at least you cared.

I hope you know that's not your fault
It is a difficult situation...no doubt about that

You did an excellent thing. We can only go so far, only do so much.

There's no way you could have known what might or might not be said on the phone by the poster or the hotline worker, or which services have what sort of policies in such situations. No way.

Please, don't beat yourself up for caring.

Tex,
you cared and you provided support for her in a difficult situation. Sometimes there are no happy endings, or the happy ending only is realized after hitting a few speed bumps. You did a good thing to post those numbers. I realized looking at that list that there must be a lot of resources in my area too. It's good to know, and you've probably helped many people than you realize by doing that research and putting all the numbers in one place. ((((TexChic))))

It could have been worse....who knows what would have happened if you had not posted those numbers? The babbler is still alive, and right now that's what matters most.

Your intentions were good. Do not blame yourself for other's mistakes (the hotline).

*hugs*
