Dear Dr. Bob,
Is "sq*aw" an offensive word here on P-Babble? I am half-American Indian and proud of my heritage, and I take the word sq*aw in a positive light. The Iroquois of which I am a tribal member do not look down on their "squaws" and in fact treat them with great respect, which I why I put "sq*aw" in my username. Must I pick a name without that word?
Sincerely,
"sq*aw16/rainsq*aw"

It certainly doesn't offend me. I don't know what a sq*aw is though!

> Hi!
Dr. Bob, I know it's not your fault, but I find the fact that the word sq*aw is automatically asterisked incredibly offensive. I would be just as disgusted if, as the result of sexism the word female, would have to be asterisked.
I'd really like to stick that asterisk where the true vulgarity orignated from.

Thanks for following up on this. This site defers to Merriam-Webster Online:

I'm glad you're proud of your heritage, and there's something to be said for "reclaiming" words like this, but yes, could you pick a name without that word? Thanks,
Bob
