Preventative Measures

Posted by alexandra_k on October 11, 2004, at 17:33:14

It seems to me that sometimes people receive civility warnings / requests to rephrase without understanding what is considered objectionable. This may result in people thinking that the rules are somehow 'arbitrary' or a matter of personal whim.

Perhaps preventative measures could be taken by adding a brief phrase to highlight the problem. People could use this to come to better understand the rules and they may seem less arbitrary as a consequence. This may also prevent some of the threads where a situation escalates due to a misunderstanding / miscommunication.

It may take a bit more time, but I think it may be a useful preventative step that can help foster a positive VLG atmosphere.

Thanks for helping out with ideas, but I do usually quote both the part of the post that I consider problematic and the relevant section of the FAQ...

Did I check that? Did I miss a board?

Okay, I didn't realise that the link that was included took the poster to the relevant section of the civility rules. I just noticed that some people do not seem to understand how some of their phrases are considered objectionable.

I do have another idea that has crystalised after having a hunt through the archives as it has come up there also. I have a hard time remembering which boards I have and have not checked. This is made harder by the links to the boards appearing in different orders on different boards. How about putting them in a standard order - alphabetical seems as good to me as any other.

It seems that they are in alphabetical order...

You would think I would have checked that before opening my gob...

Sorry, not sure what my problem is...
I am going to go take my meds now...

Okey Dokey, it is true that the links are in alphabetical order. But it is also true that there is no link from the relationships board to the writing board. You also can't get from the newbies board to writing, 2000, or admin. I haven't gone through the rest of them, but there it is, thats my problem :-)

Thanks for pointing that out. They should be fixed now. BTW, it was deliberate, not linking Newbies to 2000, since newbies wouldn't be able to post there...
