Sometimes my computer gets hung up while at this site. Sometimes I have to exit Netscape and start again. Sometimes I have to reboot. This doesn't seem to happen with any other web sites. Any ideas? Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks,
Emme

I don't know why, but mine frequently does the same thing on this site.

Try using Internet Explorer instead of Netscape...

I am using Internet Explorer. Here is what happens. I go to the main website and usually I choose Psychological Babble first. Everything loads properly and then when I click on the first post I want to view, it freezes. I have to completely exit the site and try again. Happens pretty frequently, and only with this site.

> ElleYes, it hangs up trying to load a post, though not always the first post. It seems to happen randomly. Getting to the main page to start is okay. I'm running Netscape 7.1, so it should be up to date. I can try Internet Explorer, though if Elle is having problems on IE, then that might not be the problem. What is the current version of Internet Explorer - I've rarely ever used it.

My browser (IE) also gets hung up sometimes, 'though only in the last few weeks. What I do is click on the *second* post in a thread if the first doesn't seem to want to open, and that usually opens. Then, I can go to the first post via the second -- if that makes any sense at all.
Right now, for me, on dial up, it is quicker than exiting Explorer and getting in again. Or...it could just be my PC.

I've experienced very slow response times on PB tonight. My computer also "locked up" several times and I had to reboot.

Mine too, on IE and I'd assumed it was just my computer.

I would be happy to collect information about this problem, and then work with Dr. Bob to see if we can figure it out. Sounds like it is browser independent. If you don't know some of these answers, that is OK. If I need more details, I could send you an email explaining how to find them.
Please send your information to babble fallsfall (a hotmail account).
Please tell me about your computer and internet connection:
1. What processor does your computer have?
2. How much RAM? (see Control Panel/System)
3. Internet connection: Dialup (what speed)/DSL/cablemodem?
4. What operating system? (Windows 2000, Windows ME, MacOSX, etc.)
5. How much free disk space do you have?
6. Have you seen this "same" problem with any other sites?
7. Have you changed anything on your computer recently - particularly if you can identify when the problem first started happening for you, did you change anything just before that time? (new OS, upgraded hardware, got virus, filled up hard drive, de-fragmented, etc.)Tell me about *each* time when you have seen the problem:
A. Date/time (and timezone...)
B. Exactly what you did (Open main site, go to Psych board, click on [give me the URL of the link you were trying to get to], froze for 2 minutes, click on X in corner to close window, tried again and it worked - or whatever)
C. What else was running on your computer at the time? What applications were "up"? Were you doing more than one thing at a time (i.e. downloading music at the same time)?I'll let you know what we figure out!
Thanks,
Falls

Falls,
lol, sorry, you have SO MUCH ENERGY while I have the motivation of a gnat (as I *think* was said once by Fi, and is so very, very accurate). Best of luck to you in figuring this out. Undoubtedly a micro$oft workaround will be in order.....for us Mac-user-wannabe folk.As a gnat (motivation-wise), I can't help much, except for what I already said (clicking on the second message in a thread will open the thread).
To me it is ironic/funny because you are so obviously capable and know what you are doing, and I am not/do not, and I guess it seems to me like talking to my dawgs. There's a Larson-maybe (can't remember the author) cartoon about what people say (like "Ginger, do NOT get into the trash") and what dogs hear (Ginger, blah blah blah blah blah).
I would love to help, but I have really very little idea of what you are asking, although I VERY MUCH ADMIRE your capability to ask and make sense of the data you gather. It makes me wonder why somebody has not swooped you up and hired you to fix their failing systems, because you are so talented!
Best of luck to you, and best regards,
Shar

Sweet Shar,
Yes, this IS what I do for a living when I'm not so depressed that my brain won't work. I was happy to share my 10 minutes of energy with the board.
So you are on a Mac? I was a Mac person for a very long time (I think until someone GAVE me a PC...)
Next time you see the problem, instead of choosing the second one when the first hangs up, try the first one again. And let me know what happens? My guess is that the first one will continue to be hung - but only you can tell me for sure!
This kind of work really is fun, but when you are doing it for real, and other people's businesses depend on your stuff working it can be stressful (fortunately I've never done it for software that people's *lives* depended on).

Clearing your cache??
these sorts of problems you are reporting are often associated with full caches, and can appear to only happen at one site.
What you need to do (I only know it in IE I'm afraid) is go to Tools Menu, then choose Internet Options, and then click on the "Delete Files" button.. this may take quite a while to perform its task so be patient.

Good idea, Nikki.
I tried to go to Amazon.com earlier today, and it delayed about a minute before it connected.
Then a little later, I was on the Admin board and clicked on the social link at the bottom of the page. It hung for over 2 minutes, I clicked the social link again and it connected immediately.
Sometime when you are patient, if it seems to hang, walk away for 10 minutes to see if it is really hanging, or if it is just incredibly slow.
Let me know!

Problems like this can also be caused by a "dirty" phone line.. I know at one point I couldn't connect to ANY site based in the US (except, bizarrely, PB!!) and it had been caused by noise on my phone line (that couldn't be heard, but was affecting my broadband connection), so I called my phone company, told them I was using the phone line for internet and could they clean it to internet standards, they did, and my problems were sorted!!

Thanks. I'll look into the phone line. I've also started having problems accessing my yahoo account. It seems worse since I've started DSL service last week. I clear the cache all the time, so I don't that's an issue.
My brother said that he'd had similar problems due to spyware. I installed and ran Spysweeper and it found four hits. But now even after removing them I'm still having problems.
I'm running Windows XP. I have 256 MB RAM. On this site, it seems random which posts I can open and which ones I can't. It just sits there and does nothing and there's no activity showing up on the modem. I stop it, try another post and presto, there it is.

I have a crummy old laptop that is no stranger to various fits and hang ups, many requiring reboot, but I too have noticed a disproportionate number of problems with this board. Often a link goes nowhere when clicked as you are mentioning. When that happens, I have noticed that sometimes if I minimize that window, a window containing the post I wanted to read will be *underneath* it. And not just when using IE, which tends to open things in new windows. So try looking under your current window.
Other times I have both IE and AOL/IE browsers open at the same time, and curiously every now and then the two will become linked so that trying to operate the board from the IE side will pull me back to the AOL side (which I may have escaped to IE from in the first place if the AOL side wasn't running Babble or anything else well at the time). Most of the time I can use and post from them completely separately.
In general when links don't work, you might also want to do an IE repair occasionally. This is an option you can find in at least some OSs (mine is Win 98 SE)at Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Highlight IE and click "Add/Remove." Don't be scared, it won't be removed at that point, but will next give you the option to have a a repair performed, which will also report any missing components that you need to find online and download (there are many sites specifically for that; to shut up your computer's error messages about a dll file missing or whatever). Other OSs and browsers may have a similar repair option.
But me? Nope, I don't have it all figured out and often just reboot or open IE rather than rebooting (to the extent that the other issue described above doesn't then kick in). But, while I blame most of my site operation issues on simply needing to face that I can't expect much from this particular beast anymore, it is true regardless that I have more issues at Babble than anywhere else....
This is the end of the thread.
