A humble request re the news.gif

Posted by Seamus2 on August 17, 2002, at 18:18:59

Dr Bob,

I turn off automatic image loading in my browser because all I'm really interested in is the content. It makes web browsing a heckuva lot faster on a dialup, too. (though I do miss out on your everchanging pictures)

Your "news.gif"/"New" indicator is a great device for skimming the PB forum but I often have to scroll down a ways to find one before I can right-click on it and display it; whereupon it shows up in every instance and then I'm surfin' happy.

Could you place that "news.gif" next to the "Previous "New" Indicators" submit button, or incorporate it into the button itself? Or in some stationary, stable place up towards the top of each page?

That way I'll be sure not to miss any new posts because I scrolled past them looking for the tiny hollow square indicating a "news.gif".

Thanks,

Seamus

Man, that's some heavy-duty javascript in these pages!

I thought you had originally borrowed the basics from Matt's Script Archive, or am I mistaken? My hat's off to you, in any case... it seems to work incredibly well.

Anyway, another way to approach my humble request is providing the user with the option to display just the new replies since his last vist; much as you do with the "Find posts specifically for you:" command.

I'm finding it difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff these days.

Thanks,

Seamus

I try to use a minimum of graphics here for exactly that reason. Have you considered turning it back on before you visit here even if you don't want to keep it on all the time?

Once you've manually loaded it, doesn't it get cached and then displayed on later visits, too?

Maybe, though then it might be interpreted as indicating that whatever it was next to was new, which wouldn't be the case...

I think that would be a nice option, and it's been suggested before, for example, see:

But I couldn't think of a way to do it then. But since I have more experience with "dynamic" web pages now, there might be a way, hmm... But don't hold your breath! :-)

Bob
