Support for Dr Bob

Posted by tabitha on July 4, 2002, at 2:58:36

Hi,

Just want to weigh in with my opinion on the board administration -- though there's discord over the particulars of Dr Bob's moderating lately, I for one am grateful he's doing the job he's doing.

Has anyone tried using the Usenet groups? Those boards have no moderators, and over the years as more people get on the net, they've degenerated into just about nothing but trolls, flame wars, and spam. There's no community sense at all.

IMO the rules about civility and profanity here, and the presence of a moderator, make all the difference in the world.

Thanks Dr Bob.

I agree. We should be grateful for having a safe forum.

Remember back in 1993 when there _was_ nothing like the net? None of us would have been able to meet, share information on meds, or support.

Thanks Dr. Bob. :D

Thanks, both of you, for helping balance what inevitably seemed as if only the negative was recognized. I've been on deteriorated boards. Let's just say, everybody regressed. .. Acknowledgements are due Bob for being mindful of civil in the first place, and for caring about it.

but, I'm a little confused, Zo. Your thread above was rather "negative", though I support it.

Oh well. Take care.

Do take care of yourself Krazy Kitty. I understand your need to leave. This board is quite frustrating now and then and I take long breaks myself. This place is a great example of the good, the bad and the ugly. Unfortunately, like you say, WE aren't in control and just have to bob along in the waves----pun intended. :)
take care

Oracle here....

Good point. I suspect few have. Usenet has been going on for decades. Perhaps those who don't like they way this board is run should check them out first before they suggest changes here. Just subscribe to a few about mental health.

Agreed. I'd suggest alt.support.depression.medication. In theory a great idea, but wading through all the stuff mentioned above (plus dealing with those who think their mission in life is to warn others of the evils of medication) make Psycho-Babble a joy by comparison.

Why? What on earth is the connection? I am having trouble imagining where you are coming from on this.
Is change "wrong"? Is dissent "wrong"? If it's unfair, one should just leave? My definition of community looks to be waaay different than yours.

I thought so. You don't know what Usenet is.
It is a ~20 year experiment in unmoderated
list-servs.

I know perfectly well what usenet is.

And I don't appreciate the condescension in your posts to me. How old are you, anyway? And where do you get off judging me.. . instead of listening?

Just to note, Dr. Bob's use of maintaining civility is a needed part of *any* civil society. In that respect, even if it mean't my 'banning', I would still support it.

Just to add..this is why I started with my idea of PB Peace Keepers. If we can help promote civility, why not? The point is not to have anybody 'judge' who is civil, but to promote the idea, period. To de-fuse tense situations, especially so they don't escalate.

Maybe we can have a seperate, PB Peace Keepers board, for people to work out their problems under a rotating of all members as 'Peacekeepers'.

I have chosen to not continue in these threads
on the Admin page. This meta discussion, a discussion of the discussion,
has gone too far for me. I have made my points and to continue would seem
to just make things worse.

I am thankful for the free resources and dedicated persons on the internet
who make these communities possible. I come and go as I please and stay longer if
it suits me.

Back to support.

For what it's worth, I also want to thank Dr. Bob for his running of this site. While he's not perfect, and indeed who of us is, I think he does his best to try provide a framework to make the site supportive for as many as possible, and perhaps more importantly for each of the many.

I do think in this case he probably made a mistake. In my conversations with Sandra Dee at chat prior to this incident, I have come away with the impression that she was not a person who would intentionally show disrespect or incivility towards Lou, and not changing a subject line is a mistake that I for one have frequently made and afterwards have regretted.

But overall, I think Dr. Bob administers this site justly and fairly, without favoritism. And I really appreciate the wit and humor of his brief responses, and the frequent succinct kindness contained in them. And I don't for one moment think his research drives his actions. In fact, each time I return, it is usually due to my respect for Dr. Bob and the way he runs this site.

Dr. Bob, I think you're a pretty terrific administrator.

Well put, Dinah.

You know I'm pretty new here, and when I started this thread, I was disturbed that there was so much criticism of Dr Bob. I was afraid he'd just shrivel up and die, or at least give up on the site (basically projecting my own low tolerance for conflict onto Dr Bob). Then I browsed thru the archives, and woo-ee(!), I realized this much conflict is not unprecedented at all.

I wanted to throw in some (sincere) supportive words to keep Bob going and save the site from ruin. I didn't mean to discount people's concerns about the issues at hand, though I fear it came off that way.
