Med Babble, Social Babble, Psycho Babble, Faith...

Posted by beardedlady on June 6, 2002, at 6:16:38

Babble.

It's the med board name that doesn't work (says nothing about meds!), which is why folks keep posting med questions on Psycho Psycho (they're used to that word once). Psycho should really be for psychology, and med should be for med. So maybe Babble, rather than Psycho, should be the unifying theme.

Med Babble, Social Babble, Psycho Babble (therapy), Faith Babble, Book Babble, 2000 Babble, 2001 Babble. If you think there will be a problem with the new Psycho Babble name switching, then maybe it could be just Psych Babble (or Psyche Babble?).

I still think the other way is more creative, but maybe creative causes confusion here.

I know that it's not what you'd originally had in mind and that we are often married to our original ideas, but you probably never expected to have so many boards. If you can be flexible with your board additions, you'll probably have to modify your original names.

The bullets look good. I like the bold face in the therapy section, but you should bold the others, too (medication-related, just being social, etc.).

Forgive me BL if this is just what you suggested - I only perused your post.

Med -- "issues regarding mediciation" NOT medication-related issues

Psycho - "issues regarding therapy"

Faith- "issues regarding faith"
- why use the term "religious"? couldn't it include "faith in a philosophy" or a general idea?

Admin - "issues regarding the operation of the site and civility concerns"

2000 and 2001 - "boards for posters who signed up during those years. restricted access."

Book Club - "board for discussion of books"

Definitely consistancy in wording would be helpful...

And, again, Kiddo's suggestion re: creating a portal - I know that's not a quick thing to do, but it would clear up a a lot of confusion.

Board name confusion

I like the current board names. Psycho Psycho in particular makes me laugh. Do two psychos make a sane person or just a square psycho? A quick run through the boards shows that most people aren't confused. Even so, I'd like to throw out my own ideas about some simple (I think) steps that might make the boards clearer. Please forgive the presumption but I find playing with someones design after they've done all the work is almost irresistable.

1. For people reading posts.
Add a line right under the "[ Thread | Post follow-up ...." options above the posts saying this is the "X" board about "xxxxxxx". To see a list of other boards click here" and bring up a list with descriptions in a new window.

2. For people posting.
At the confirm posts stage put a line saying "this post is going to X which is for discussion of xxxxxx. You can redirect it to another board using the revise post option. For a list of the other boards ....." Perhaps stick this right above the confirm post button so it would be hard to miss.

The name "psycho babble" just doesn't work anymore. There are too many boards, and psycho babble is THE one that doesn't make sense, as there is nothing about meds in its name.

Like with this post?

I'm not so sure about this one. It still does say where the post is going, although I took out the descriptions when I made it a pop-up menu...

First the part I understand: Psycho Babble could possibly become Psycho Pharmological Babble. The pspycho and babble remain but the intent of the board, to me anyway, seems clearer.

Now for the hard part for me. I looked and looked at the post re simple steps. I just don't see what you mean when you said, "like this post?" I think I understand what was said about the reply posts but I just didn't see anything different with the first part of the answer, especially if I compared it to earlier posts. It all looks the same.

Could you comment on this, please? I respect that this site began as Psycho Babble, but as the number of boards increases (I'm in favor of that; it makes it easier, not harder, to use the site, as it is less likely to get lost amid a billion posters, some of whom never leave the med board), that name doesn't make sense anymore--as a med board, anyway.

Maybe Babble, rather than Psycho, can be the creative uniform link: Med Babble, Social Babble, Faith Babble, Psyche or Psycho Babble, Admin Babble, Book Babble, etc.

I added (1) a "List of boards" link that goes to a "control panel" that you can make little and keep off to the side and use to switch between boards and (2) a bit of description: "Psycho-Babble Administration : operation of this site"...

I guess I am more dense than I thought -- It took me forever, but I finally figured out what you were saying re list of boards--a relief for me.

Also, I realized I misspelled pharmacological not pharmological -- that would mean calling the board Psycho-Pharmalogical-Babble.

thanks for the clarification. MA

Yes. But it currently is entered as a link to take you to the board that you are already reading. To me that is more confusing. I think it should be plain text as in "This Board is Psycho Babble Administration about the operation of this site"

I think you have two problems here. Fairly new posters who haven't mastered the different boards probably could use some kind of description but, since they don't know that they need it, adding it to the pop up menu won't help. I don't know what would work here.

Some people also post to the wrong board because they lose track of where they are when they post. I know that I never consciously look at what board is shown on the confirm posts screen because I assume that I already know. Sooner or later that is sure to trip me up. If the board name was made more prominent by making it bold font, possibly bigger, and putting it either directly under the "Confirm your post:" heading where the post title now goes or down by the Confirm post button there's a chance it might jump out catch the eye of someone who has just forgotten what board they are on.

A link might take someone directly to a post, so there needs to be a way to get back to the corresponding main page. And I'm trying to keep this short, so it stays on one line. How about:

> > > 2. For people posting.

Well, there are descriptions on the main pages, and if they miss those and post to the "wrong" board, I (or someone else) can just redirect them. That's not so bad, is it?

> Some people also post to the wrong board because they lose track of where they are when they post. I know that I never consciously look at what board is shown on the confirm posts screen because I assume that I already know.

Sorry, but if they lose track, but it says right there, but they don't look...

> Sooner or later that is sure to trip me up.

But it hasn't yet? I do think a follow-up will usually belong on the same board, so usually it's fine...
