shelli,
I'm pretty much off the board. I keep coming back and checking for posts by folks I know, though, and, of course, out of curiosity.
I have not been comfortable since Sar's death. I felt it was handled badly by Dr. Bob (just mho). And I imagine those of us who "knew" her better (is that what you meant?) inadvertantly created a clique to help us deal with it, and that left others needlessly out. It still bothers me that people who had taken a break and come back would not know of her death at this point. Even if the thread re: "tributes" to her were kept "up" on social, that would be enough...
But, like Mair, when I see Your name, I tend to check the thread. I did miss these concerns though, and I'm sorry.
Take care. Perhaps email Dr. Bob if he doesn't catch this here? You stated your opinion very well, imo.

Hi Shelli, Mair, KK, & of course, Dr Bob,
I thought about Shelli's question, and believe she has valid concerns about a situation like hers. Personally, I think I would have posted to the meds board, but I also think it should get a name change as soon as possible. Just call it "Meds." Then it will be fairly clear where to post if you have a question like Shelli's (the MAOIs in combo with the SSRIs) that needs immediate attention.
But, that's just me, I would probably take care of the "clinical" situation right off the bat, and then look for emotional support. But again, I can see Shelli's point, and I can very well imagine being confused about the boards right now. Someone who is feeling terrible, and is looking for answers, and looking for support, like she was, might not be able to cope with the fractured nature of the multiple boards that have sprung up like so many weeds. Who needs the added stress? And as I say, I can see that someone might give up, cuz there are too many options.
Newcomers will be able to understand a new name like "Meds" (right?), but more importantly, I think that's the "portal," so to speak, where anyone new to the site will enter the Psycho-Babble world. Typically, we plug a few terms into a search engine like Google, and we get hits on this (wonderful) site. It helped me so very much to be able to talk about meds with folks here, and I believe it nearly saved my life. But looking at the Psycho-Babble Statistics board -- and I recommend it to anyone reading this -- the number of posts to the medication board is much higher than any of the others, by far. So we may assume that medication issues are most often the reason for the initial contact by a new member.
But the fact that Shelli's question had not only to do with meds, but with a "social" issue such as the therapy dilemma, would indicate that she should post it to the "Social" board. Or, is it a "Psycho-Psycho Babble" question because it has to do with therapy.... She wants emotional support because of a difficult situation... but it's with her therapist. Someone like Shelli, a longtime poster says: now which is it? I mean, if we oldsters are still wondering what to do, doesn't this tell us something?
And I mean no disrespect, Bob, but please don't say: "Yes, but what does it tell us?" and then leave it at that...
I had never thought of a post that might include THREE different aspects to it, and therefore might be posted, with validity, on any of the three boards she mentions. It had never occurred to me. But now that she has brought it up, I think we should deal with (at the very least) changing the names of the boards to match the subject. How 'bout: Meds, Social, Therapy, Religion? I know, brilliant, right? But much easier to cope with if you're in a crisis...
Shelli might very well have to break up her discussion and post separate issues on seperate boards, but she shouldn't HAVE to in order to get the answers she needs. In this situation, it's great that Mair and KK so wonderfully replied that they were specifically looking out for her. That's a beautiful (and touching!) example of the kind of support that we can get from this site. Someone new might not be so lucky...
Shelli, I hope you feel better about this issue, and keep us posted (I know... but on which board???) on the meds and the therapy. I know what it is to feel abandoned by your shrink. They're supposed to help you heal. It can be a terrible blow...
With respect for you all,
Wendy

"I had a situation in the last months which had to do with
(1) not understanding how taking an overdose by combining a large amount of an MAOI with a large dose of an SSRI, didn't work. AT ALL. I would really..."
_______shelliR, I'm still worried about that question.
Also, The problem is that all the boards are being posted on quite a lot. The majority here wanted PSB, they wanted a faith board, they thought a therapy board would be great, the OT's board was something I don't think needs repeating.
We are the ones wanting some of these boards.
It's like city's want growth and fun things to do but the traffic is so heavy they don't recognize their old town. I think that on the occasion that we're not clear where to post, that question we might cut and paste on 3 boards.
When babble was starting, there were only a handful of people, it grew gradually. One day I logged on and saw lots of new names, next day the same. To me, it felt like it changed overnight. I was off-center for a few months but I think the board is better now.
It seems that so many expect Dr Bob to have answers to these questions "as things evolve."
Maybe we have the right to immediate concrete solutions and answers but he's a shrink!! You know how these people are..I mean, is your shrink well? Dr Bob stands under a waterfall on a mental illness site...y'all gettin my drift? As soon as a patient leaves his office he grabs his yoyo and starts doing yoyo tricks. He's still pissed about losing the Duncan yoyo title in 1970.
One of my shrinks spoke in such a low voice, I was always going,"WHAT?" Finally I got tired of it and would just nod my head having no idea what that man was saying.
I have pectus excavatum, sunken chest, and saw my first shrink about that. A cowboy type in San Antonio. His advice for my uncomfortable feelings. Hey, you got a good looking girlfriend?
I did at the time so he said, just go to the pool with her, nobody will notice you. His second pearl, "When I'm pissed off, I say horse shit. I hate those words but it helps." I walked out of his office with a lighter wallet and a very baffled look on my face..it's still there.
Anyway, Dr Bob, we love ya but you just take your time. If you get tired of the yoyo, the hula hoop awaits. And don't be ashamed about consulting with Judge Judy, I won't tell.
I'm sure the doctor knows I'm joking..ha ha?
I'll probably be blocked for two life sentences, Judge Judy doesn't miss a trick.Phil

Boy, it's either my medication, or a bad personal trait, but i seem to just skim posts more and more and miss their true meaning.
After reading Phil's post, I was drawn back to your original one.

I, too, am concerned about this post. I did not grasp its meaning. i hope you are o.k.
>> but the good thing that came out of that for me was it created a very tight group
I completely misread this and thought you said "the bad thing". I'm glad the tight group was of help. It was for me.
Do you think that these boards could potentially create more tight groups that could be helpful too? If the navigation were presented in a clearer format, as kiddo has suggested? My only problem with the 2000 and 2001 groups was the inability for others to post...

Sorry. Maybe with time you'll get more used to the new arrangement? Especially if you feel better in general?

That's kind of a secondary issue right now...
> (2) I was terminated by my therapist unless I went into a duel diagnosis program IN the hospital for at least a month. I was prescribed (yes prescribed) a codiene derivitive because nothing was touching my depression--20 combinations of drugs in two years. Most important after going over the literature on opiates I do not think I'm a drug addict because I never take it for recreational purposes; it never makes me high, etc. So I didn't want to do into a program that I didn't feel that I belonged and of course I felt greatly abandoned, even though I made the final judgment.

that there is a relationship between the number of active users, frequency of archival rate(number of posts during X time) and perceived value of posts (ie support gained), which I will call 'turn over rate'? That as the overall site grows in active users, meaning, possibly, registered users,it, the site, demands more diversity, or specialization, in addition, to keep the 'turn over rate' lower? Therefore, the request for and addition of, additional 'themed' boards?
Kind of like a mom and pop grocery store that used to have just one aisle, with essential items, but little variety, now is a neighborhood grocery, with more variety and better prices, and may end up as a C ost C o with 'perceived value and variety', a pharmacy, optometrist and bakery, packaged in a box store construction format and with stores opened worldwide?
The price of success?
actually, I am not sure what I am saying. Sorry, Beardy, for my run on sentances or what ever they are.

Dr Bob,
You don't address any of the issues I brought up in my post above. As usual, the things you wish to ignore are just left behind. There IS a long-standing and valid request to either name the boards what they really are, or else (and) (or) reduce the number of them. Is that so difficult an issue to address? With any amount of specificity? If you don't agree, I am still not understanding your reasons why.
People are concerned. I would ask, with all respect, that you give them the support and attention they deserve. You value our being supportive of each other, but does this only apply to us? I personally am feeling very ignored and undervalued by the Head Guy...
Sincerely,
Wendy

Thanks guys for your support. I have too much to say to write anything, if you what I mean. But I'm glad that you responded to me.
Dr. Bob:
> Sorry. Maybe with time you'll get more used to the new arrangement? Especially if you feel better in general?Dr. Bob, I am feeling much better in general. Generally I try not to let stuff on the internet bother me: I'd rather work on real life. But I should have predicted that if you didn't say ignore the boards if there are too many, then you'd say, "maybe you'll get used to it." Maybe you should expain why we should get used to it, when most of us would vote to stay with the originial PB and PSB, with perhaps the reunion board for 2000.
I think it was Lini (sorry if I'm wrong) who brought up the concept that we could have 100 or more boards. One for each state, each race, people with cats, etc. (And of course then there would have to be a dog board, and then if one had a cat and a dog who was driving them crazy they'd have to write on both boards, or figure that most of their "friends" are cat people. Oh yes, the animal board.
So you never did answer the question of why in such a short time you piled on so many new groups. Things were going too well? Was adding all these new groups at once an attempt to take the intensity away from the old-timers group contraversy? Do you enjoy redirecting? Well, I can only guess since you rarely (or never) answer the questions that are asked to you.
Maybe I need to stay on PB only, because if I start to accept the new boards, you might have this revelation some week to add twenty more boards. Does this have to do with your research? Are you adding these boards to clarify your studies?
I'm obviously annoyed, not just at the plethora of new boards, but that we will "come around." When I grew up my parents made me eat asparagus and I used to gag. Well, I still gagged the last time I tried asparagus. Even the thought of it makes me gag.

>Dear Bob,
It looks like valued old-timers are are saying, Bob, "I feel *worse* with all these new boards. The site is both harder to use and less the close community it was - and this is a big, important loss to me."
And it looks like you are saying, "Sorry, but this not going to change, so *you* need to adjust."
Am I anywhere near correct?
My thought is that it would be much more supportive, in the long run, to really be clear about the changes you make.
Speaking for myself, I'm not comfortable with things that are implied, and I have to find out---especially when there's not going to *be* any dialogue.
It may be okay or not okay with people , if you make unilateral decisions about Babble. But don't you think it might work better, spare lots of feelings, if this were openly stated?
It's nice to have threads with you, but it seems pretty pointless for members to post questions just to find out what is your current thinking. Seems more efficient to be clear? And perhaps smooths feelings?
Expectations (that feedback on a given issue matters) without information (the issue has already been decided) tends to lead to disappointment and bad feeling, don't you think?
And maybe people even feel a bit disrespected, like if it's a big loss, to them. . .."Sorry."
Maybe it's hard for you, as an able person, to imagine how important even small changes are, here, to us?
Maybe we don't have much other place to feel at home with friends, in our life . . .But somebody else owns this house. . Invited us here. . . but the house rules are all to make it easier for him?. . .. .. You can see where this might be difficult. . to people already in plenty of pain.

Wasn't there at least some discussion each time? Also, I think Phil and Susan C made some good points:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/admin/20020510/msgs/5522.html> Does this have to do with your research? Are you adding these boards to clarify your studies?
This isn't the first time that someone's wondered if "research" is why I'm doing something. As if you're rats I'm giving electric shocks or something. The goal of this research is understanding better "how online communities work and affect the mental health of their members". Giving you electric shocks does *not* further that goal.

> My big beef is with the bifurcation of PSB and PPB. Let's say you meet someone on the street and stop to chat and you talk very socially for awhile and then you ask your friend how things are going and your friend launches into a big explanation about her depression. I've never thought that PSB was "just social" although there are some threads that are just that. But how do you separate out a discussion about how genuinely lousy you feel without talking as well about therapy issues - maybe not discreet issues about a therapist or about the efficacy of specific types of therapys, but certainly what you're trying to work on and address in therapy? There's alot of overlap, and if you look at PSB there are several threads that hardly fit into the category of social chitchat.
I agree, there's a lot of overlap. Maybe post to PSB if you're more interested in support and PPB if you're more interested in information? But like I said before:

That's always possible. In any case, it's important for me to not retain any resentment or anger about it. I'll either stay or leave or stay then leave or leave then come back. Whatever. Drug/medication information has always been my main draw and that remains.
I was a bit teased over to the support side after
Sar's death--by feeling very connected and for me that proved to not such a good idea-- based on the resulting changes. Oh well, life moves on.And I have reminded myself that this is your board. So I'll back off. But about the following statement of yours:
"If you could please try to accept what I decide and to trust that I'm doing my best to be fair and to do what I think will be good for this community as a whole, I'd really appreciate it."
Okay I find this statement absolutely insulting.
Recently I think you have made some very bad judgments (which to me don't have to do with fairness) and I am trying to (1) tell you know why I believe they are bad decisions, and (2) try to understand why you are making (imo) bad choices, especially in such a short time. One second we are debating having an oldtimers board; the next week we have that board as well as three others. The speed itself felt shocking and not in our best interest. It is not about about things getting bigger for me (a city), it is for me about all the overlap.
If I don't like the decisions that you are making, I have several choices: live with them, leave, speak up about them, or all of the above. If you don't want feedback, then make a rule that feedback is not civil. Or substract the administrative board. To tell us that you are doing what you feel is best for the community is fine; to tell us that we should accept the changes that you decide is truely patronizing.

The talk for having an old timers board has been going on for at least 6 months to my memory.. it just died down for a while before coming up again.
I think its harsh to attack Dr Bob like this, would our lifes be better with no PB?? No, I know mine wouldn't.. this place has been very important to me.
thing is, if I was being attacked about MY web site all the time, I'd end up rather pissed off and close the board down.

Hi Nikki,
I'm really ready to let this go, but I did think that I had to clarify something first. The discussion on the old timers board did last a long time. Actually, there wasn't much of a discussion since it is obvious that Dr. Bob had already made up his mind. But if you look through the past threads, I didn't have much of a problem with having that new board, just preferred that it be called a reunion board.
On the other hand, once that had been finally established, three or four other boards were immediately established. And that is what upset me--not the first board.
I have generally thought PB to be a fair board, not perfect but generally fair. I think there is a reason that very smart people are attracted to PB. I have also been very connected and to withdrawal would be major for me.
My life has been made better having PB also, but with all the new boards, redirects, and bans, I'm not sure anymore. And I felt angry that I perceived Dr. Bob as telling us that we should accept without comment many sudden changes. So many people feel unhappy now. Perhaps this will pass, but I think we have a pretty rational group of people and I wouldn't automatically dismiss all the concerns that are being expressed.
I hope I have made my position a bit clearer; if not we will just have to disagree.
Peace,
Shelli

You're right, how fast to make changes is a separate question. Spreading them out might be less disruptive, but I think there's also something to be said for acting when an issue comes up.
Overlap is important and the reason I haven't gone ahead with other suggested boards. It would not only make it more confusing for posters, but mean more redirecting for me.
I didn't say you "should" accept any changes, I just said I'd appreciate it if you did...

I still only frequent about 3 boards on a regular basis, and spot check others from time to time. Most of the boards don't hold much interest for me, but I'm happy for other people to have them.
Oh, yeah. And, if they don't get used, they'll eventually be taken down. That has happened before also. Eliminating a board will help alleviate confusion.

Okay, Dr. Bob. Very true.
And for all you happy people (Nikki, Phil, Shar, etc.)
I am ready to let go of all my annoyance and move foward. I am bored with this whole topic and especially bored with me. (a feeling I would venture to guess you guys share.)My perennials are all starting to bloom and are quite beautiful. If you lived closer I would deliver a bouquet to each of you.
