All these stinkin' sites confuse me!

Posted by BarbaraCat on June 6, 2002, at 1:40:06

Just my two cents, but this is getting way too complicated. OK, I understand the med board and the religious board are pretty self explanatory, and books is a no-brainer, but I'm confused about the diff between psycho-psycho and psycho-social. Like, where do I bare my currently anxious and depressed soul hoping to receive support? I'm not partcularly feeling up to wading through what's becoming a psycho-dewey-decimal system.

And where do I post this? Psyco-Admin? Probably, but I'd sure hate other potentially sympathetic and helpful readers in social or psycho to never see or respond to it cause they don't go board hopping. Maybe much of my pissed offedness is due to a needed med change that only my long time buddies in plain ol' psycho (meds, that is) know me well enough to comment on. Do I now have to be concerned that I'm posting to inappropriate boards? Do I have to censor and split up my posts so that a reference to a book buried in a plea for help that mentions my Catholic upbringing all have to be divided into their appropriate categories?

I think I'm going to bow out of this board for a while and hopefully y'all will settle on less of a moving target. I'm too frazzled to deal with this right now and it's become way too compartmentalized. Maybe we're getting too big. Maybe someone will start another simplified site. Hasta luego. - Barbara

Is this discription, which apears at the top of the page, no clear ?

Psycho-Psycho-Babble is about psychology and psychological treatments,
Psycho-Babble about Faith is about religious faith,
Psycho-Social-Babble is for being social,
Psycho-Babble Book Club is about books,
Psycho-Babble 2000 and 2001 are for "old-timers" who started posting then, and
Psycho-Babble Administration concerns the operation of this site.

I see what you're saying, and maybe I need to revise the descriptions a little. General support, since it's not about psychology or psychological treatments, would be Psycho-Social-Babble.

There's no denying that it's getting more complicated. Like Phil said, it may now be more like a city than a small town:

And city life isn't for everyone. OTOH, the "class of xxx" boards should stay smaller...

It's not a big deal. The worst that can happen is I'll repost it...

Thanks for the reply. I'm having a difficult time lately and it doesn't take much. I think perhaps a Psycho-Rant board would be in order. Psycho-Social sounds too cheery for those feeling not so social. - Barbara

Bob

I almost hate to wade in here because I feel that I gave it my best shot at expressing disatisfaction with multiple boards when the creation of an OT board was being discussed.

I do think we have some superfluous boards and that there is legitimate confusion over crossing the lines between one board and another.

I think it makes sense to have a meds board (perhaps named something other than PB) for those people who really just have meds questions.

I hated the idea of the 2000 Board but don't want to go there again - that board should stay.

I don't think many people on the 2001 board would care whether it stayed or went.

I actually think the faith board is a good thing. It's my observation that babblers there are communicating with one another in a way that wouldn't be comfortable on other boards and would probably be off-putting to many.

My big beef is with the bifurcation of PSB and PPB. Let's say you meet someone on the street and stop to chat and you talk very socially for awhile and then you ask your friend how things are going and your friend launches into a big explanation about her depression. I've never thought that PSB was "just social" although there are some threads that are just that. But how do you separate out a discussion about how genuinely lousy you feel without talking as well about therapy issues - maybe not discreet issues about a therapist or about the efficacy of specific types of therapys, but certainly what you're trying to work on and address in therapy? There's alot of overlap, and if you look at PSB there are several threads that hardly fit into the category of social chitchat.

I'm not doing great at the moment and have considered posting about some of what's been going on with me. But like many others here, asking for help or support doesn't come anywhere near as easily as offering support to others. Getting over this hump is made much more difficult IMO when you have to decide (in your already confused state) where to post. People do want to post where they're most likely to get a response and that enters into the decision as well. In my case sometimes it's just easier not to bother.

Maybe you should get rid of a few extra boards (at least temporarily) and institute a rule that no post will be redirected if it at least partially involves the subject matter of that board. This might address Shelli's conundrum.

Mair,
Well said and I couldn't agree with you more. I'm currently not feeling very well physically (fibromyalgia flare) or psychically and just can't decide in my present state where to post. I think the Meds boards probably fits the best since it alone seems to deal with these morbid states, however, my discussion would most likely not touch upon meds. This brings up a Psycho-Somatic board possibility, but please! the title alone puts me off as much as one more board to deal with.

Alas, we are growing too big to remain in just one or two categories, but presently it's too much work to come up with a viable alternative.

When I'm feeling better, I wonder why the number of sites & their captions confuse people (clear & simple to me), but then I remember the times I didn't feel good & it's easy to get confused.

Even with lots of clear captions & links back & forth, the most logical set-up still can seem a labyrinth when one's mind is feeling less than good. Mair's points are well made.

If I wanted to use the faith or books boards, I would but I don't need them. But as one of the 2001 posters, that board is not important to me. I still stick with the meds, social & admin boards only.

Any changes need to be made with the empathy of feeling lousy & sharp as wet liver to understand what's clear & what's not. It's difficult for Dr. Bob to know what to decide when he's feeling so sharp & bright himself.
