PB Open ... Dr. Bob please read

Posted by Katt on May 19, 2002, at 21:29:00

Dr. Bob,
I have noticed that the PB Open is a terrible idea. It leaves a lot of room for people to be rude and even abusive. I left the site tonight feeling very suicidal because of some comments someone made to me. The chat forum is not moderated and you provide no net or means of safety for people badgered there. I think it should either be monitored or eliminated.

Katt-

From what I remember, Dr. Bob is out of town at a convention. and I don't think anyone has been appointed his fill-in.

Have you tried talking to that person(s)? I wasn't there, but I do frequent chat a lot, and can't help but think it's a misunderstanding?

Hope that helps,

Kiddo

Katt, I'm sorry to hear you feel this way about PB Open. I have found it to be immensely valuable and the people I have met there have been caring, supportive and understanding. I know that PBO has the same limitations as posting, in that there is no ability to hear tone of voice or read facial expressions and perhaps this results in some misunderstandings. I have found it helpful to do as kiddo suggested and check out any comments I'm not sure how to interpret by asking the person who made them. I hope this is something you can clear up with a quick conversation with the party or parties involved and I look forward to seeing you back in chat. Take care

Katt,

I wasn't in the chat room so I have no idea as to what went down. Indeed the online forum is a strange place to get tangled up in misunderstandings. Over the years that I have lurked PB and its various spinoffs there have arisen a few thorns to prick a lot of us.....but all in all this has remained a relatively safe environment.

As far as PB Open goes.....I've only participated in that side of things for a few weeks now. It has a TON of wiggle room for things getting blown out of proportion. Everyone that I have come across in open has had their ups and downs. People get out of sorts and can often extend that energy out to the others in chat. I'm sorry if someone made you feel uncomfortable....without having been there I don't know what else to say.

My guess would be that whatever was said was unintentional....forgive me if I am totally off base here. No one ever deserves to be treated with a lack of respect.

Please consider using the other boards instead of PB Open for a while to continue to share with us. People here care about you Katt and worry about you.

With kindness and open ears/eyes,

Alii

Katt:

He Is out of town (my pdoc went to the same event), so it may take awhile for his repsonse.

I'm sorry, too, that you had that experience. It is a separate thing from the board, a place that anyone can come to (any Yahoo chatter), so you may not have been even dealing with a Babbler. I hope you weren't.

You bring up a valid point, and, if there's not already a statement, there should be something that says it's not monitored or endorsed by Psycho-Babble.

I'd stay away from it for awhile and post here. It's probably safer.

But, if you want to try later, it has been a large source of support for me, as well. So it might be worth it.

I'm sorry nothing worked out on covering for this- I thought there had been lots of offers but hadnt read all the posts on that.

So that's why the poor soul is redirecting messages about his pic to this board at 23.30ish...!

I don't know about the fill-in thing. I thought he said he wouldn't be here from the 18th to the ?? and was taking requests for someone to help him out..I forgot the end date...so I'm not sure when he'll be back full time.

Personally, I think he could use an assistant full time. Perhaps a moderator without the ability to block ppl but help him with the techie stuff and/or redirects, etc.

I wonder if he has someone sleep for him :-)

BOSS

The reason, for some, that they choose to use chat is that it isn't saved. As you may know, since you've requested a copy of the comments, that two people can interpret the exact same comments in very different manners.

>If so, I can unsubscribe them...

A chat dialogue can go on for several hours and I've even seen it go for several days. Taking a portion of the chat and condemning someone for it would be a wrong decision in my opinion.

There's a small group of regulars from the babble board who almost use the board daily. There has also been newer people have have chosen to use the open option as a form of support.

The chat room has been used for more than a year regularly and there have been no complaints besides having easy access to it. Your decision at this point to begin moderating it, is way off base.

Interesting idea...

I like the idea of someone else doing the sleep for you- altho the all night TV would have to get a *lot* better for me to be interested!!

Thanks for the reply- I hadnt really meant it to be specific to you, and implying some need for a reply from you. Ticked the box on reflex action!

Well, I suppose its over to him now- if he lets us know the *next* time he wants a break, we can see if we can sort something out between us all!

again, i see no problem with there being a disclaimer re: Dr. B's involvement since it links off his site. but that's it. it's a yahoo chat group, separate from PB. that was partly why i liked the idea of doing an "old timers" chat room rather than a new page here - not PB affiliated, therefore the "exclusivity" of it is not Dr. B endorsed.

i had not even thought of the issue re: the non-permanence of comments there-that is key. if someone is going to be copying my comments from there, i won't be able to use it. and it wouldn't matter anyway if dr. bob banished someone from the site due to bad behavior there - again, any yahoo chatter can join.

YIKES!!!!! I'm all a flutter now...

If there start to be complaints, I don't think I should just ignore them. Wouldn't letting it become a free-for-all also be a wrong decision?

Just to be clear, I can unsubscribe someone from PBO as well as block them from posting here. But they might be able to get back in, that's a problem with being open...

Dr. Bob, how can you have the right to block someone from open? Is it because you are the official "moderator"?

I recall having this conversation with yourself back awhile ago, but it was concerning the boards. Do not turn the "open" venue into a "i'm telling" atmosphere. It is exactly what the name states, open. The only topics which are restricted are illegal ones; however, I do believe we only once been approached by such a discussion and the person quickly became literally bored with us and yahoo chose to remove their membership. (Apparently there was a large sting operation, but that's another story.)

Why would you feel obligated to referee a disagreement/misunderstanding/arguement (between two adults) in such a forum? In my opinion, if you do it once you would just open a door for more such concerns to come to the board. In the past such things have been settled among the users of the chat. (And sometimes the solution has been to ignore a particular individual, which the chat mechanism provides such an option.)

I do think it's best if problems can be settled there. But if not, then I still think I should try to do something.

Hmm, maybe it would help if there were a few "regulars" with whom I could consult when something comes up? Since I don't really know what goes on there...

. . .and that's exactly the way people want it. And to remain that way. I think it's important to have a place for chat that is unsupervised, and that this complements the more structured forum of the boards.

. . So keep your sticky fingers out.

Which *is,* of course, just a general impression of the consensus.

It sounds like you all have made it a nice place. I think that's great, and the last thing I want to do is interfere. As long as it stays on track, I'll keep my fingers out. Like I need more to worry about? :-) But I *do* want it to stay on track.

One of the reasons I asked for volunteers, you know, was so I wouldn't mess it up...
