The SSRIs are mostly anxiolytics that have some antidepressant effect. I am finding that bupropion is a little better than SSRIs (personally).
The problem is the model with which antidepressants are developed. They take rats, they stress them to the point that they are depressed, then they administer drugs to see if they can restore normal behavior faster than normal. Great. So, the SSRIs can buffer against depression that results from a major life stressor.
The problem is that (in many cases) clinical depression is not the result of stress. I had a 2 month vacation this summer and my depression actually got worse over this time period.
I'm not 100% sure that stimulants are the best thing to use on a daily basis long term. But, they can eliminate all symptoms of depression for some people, short term (even without producing euphoria). Hence, their actions need to be considered in the context of a dysfunctional reward system (for which antidepressants do little to fix).
