Nardil pooped out on me many years ago. I was then put on Parnate, which worked really well. Unfortunately I reduced the dose as I got 'high' on it, after an intense meditation retreat, and it stopped working entirely. I tried augmentation with low dose olanzapine and it worked again, but stupidly I also slowly decreased the olanzapine and the combo stopped working altogether. Ive no idea why reducing a med makes it stop working for me, and not for others.There are people who have been on maois for 40 years or so.
Im in the uk and after trying augmentation with lamotrigine (which has severely affected my memory) this worked, but only for 3 months.
Now the NHS psychs are giving me the alternative of ECT which I dont want, or slowly reducing the Parnate (over 9 months ?) and replacing it with venlafaxine which I would prefer not to do, as only the maois have ever worked for me, but seems I dont have that much choice, and I am seriously unwell and wracked by anxiety and loss of memory, so barely able to function.
Only the maois have really worked for me. Has anyone had any success with Marplan after taking Parnate. Or with Venlafaxine after Parnate? I am really desperate. Thank you.

Thank you.I took Marplan after the Parnate, and it was the best of the MAOI's for me. They stopped distributing it in the US so I had to switch to Nardil.
I took both while also taking Lamictal. I hated effexor; my sleep on it was worse than any of the MAOIs.
I didn't take much of a parnate wash out, just a couple of days, and moved onto the marplan.

How long were you on Parnate before the washout? Was it pain-free to wash out? How long did it take for the marplan to work ? How long did you take it before you had to stop ? Sorry for all the questions, so few people take marplan after the 2 other maois.

It was a few years ago. I think Parnate for almost a year? I never got to a very high dose I'm very sensitive. It felt like the marplan started to work quickly because MAO levels were already very inhibited from the parnate.
I definitely felt a little more emotionally open on the marplan and less detached. But I have a strange psych profile. Sex drive worked better. I drank like a fish on all three of the MAOIs. Sleep was equally terrible on all of them. I didn't have a ton of dietary issues.

I have heard that if someone has been on parnate for several years, the withdrawal can be suicidally painful, although obviously not in your case.
And Im wondering , since parnate is a more powerful drug, would the marplan be strong enough to counter the parnate withdrawing out of my system.

I can't speak to your "one drug being stronger than the other" comment, but the beneficial action of the MOAI is that it permanently blocks the enzyme that gobbles up your Serotonin, NE, and Dopamine. It takes a relatively long time for your body to replace these enzymes and then reduce these monoamine levels in your brain.
The marplan should start inhibiting the same enzymes in essentially the same way, I imagine well before the brain bounces back from the parnate.
The washout period shouldn't be the same as it would be if you were switching to an SSRI or something that actively releases one of these neurotransmitters. BUT TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR!
COMING OFF MAOIs altogether was rough, switching between them was, for me, relatively easy.

thank you porkpiehat. I am in UK under the NHS, which is a dinosaur, but unfortunately all that is available to me, as I dont have insurance. The NHS psych is insisting on a 9 month withdrawal and 2 week washout. But first insisting that I take lithium as augmentation to the parnate. Unfortunately they are not open to discussion.
