I remember asking this question 25 years ago, and all we got were more of the same SRI/NRI/NDRI's, more atypical antipsychotics..all based on the monoamine hypothesis. Oh, and their was Lamictal and one or two others. Wow..So, much of the same. And, still, benzos are considered "the work of the devil"..uggh.

We got, I think, one new treatment, esketamine, which costs so much it is beyond the average person's reach. Insurance plans stopped covering lengthy psychotherapy.."feel good in 5 minutes" CBT became the norm. (Thank you Dr. David Burn's, who has been discredited by many researchers and Pdocs)

People with mental illness still more often live in poverty, and have the worst prognosis of most illness'. Plus, even MORE have mental illness'...1 in 3 to 1 in 5..depending on the sources.

So, the Industry has deeply failed....but people who take it all into their own hands see to fare better. Many of us use much smaller amounts of medication than usually prescribed; many combine natural with meds; many combine heavy counselling with low meds; many use unconventional combination of meds with other substances.

Many of us will likely be passed on (dead) before any REALLY BIG leaps in medicine happen. So, I am not waiting. I take it ALL into my hands..after 30 years, I know what makes me happy. I TELL the doctor what I want...I use unconventional methods...I am greatly helped by long-term psychotherapy. (NO..not Fruedian...by modern, person-centered counselling)

If it feels good (long term), and your lifeskills are enhanced or stay good, then it works. Caveat ...not ALWAYS..but often..

Yeah, I am talking non monoamine meds. Or Monoamine meds with a truly novel meachanism of action. I am looking at Aloradine. It could boost my social life as a sufferer of social phobia. More friends and aquaintances would improve depression, too.
