New study posted Oct 15, 2019. Found it cause I have a cold and took some random zinc I had in the cupboard to try and help get over it.
Has anyone found Zinc to potentiate their antidepressant?
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31420165
Rapid antidepressant actions of imipramine potentiated by zinc through PKA-dependented regulation of mTOR and CREB signalingAbstract
The slow onset of traditional antidepressants has become an urgent clinical issue, researchers are constantly exploring new antidepressants with prompt action. Previous studies have found that zinc levels were decreased in serum and brain of depressed patients or animal models. Zinc treatment can improve depressive symptoms and enhance the antidepressant effects of monoamine antidepressants. However, its mechanism of action is still unclear. This present study aims to investigate whether the zinc can enhance the rapid action of traditional antidepressant imipramine and to explore the potential mechanisms of action through the rapid antidepressant targets CREB (cAMP-response element binding protein) and mTOR (mammalian target of the rapamycin). Drug treatment included intraperitoneal injection of imipramine or zinc alone and imipramine plus zinc. Zinc had a rapid enhanced antidepressive effect on the imipramine and achieved a rapid antidepressant effect similar to ketamine. Combination of zinc with imipramine rapidly enhanced the phosphorylation of mTOR Ser2448 and CREB Ser133, and increased the expression of mTOR and CREB, which were dependent on the activation of PKA. In conclusion, combination therapy with zinc and monoamine antidepressants may overcome the problem of slow-onset action of traditional antidepressants in clinical uses.

wow. as part of my DIY Orthomolecular protocol, I've been taking zinc, and...
Prozac did seem to "kick in" kinda fast, and (thankfully...) at a reasonable/standard dose (20mgs/daily).
I go for "opti-zinc," because its supposedly better absorbed...plus, its usually on sale at my online place.
thanks for this. :-)

I have taken zinc with venlafaxine and can confirm that it does help lower doses work better. Folic acid is also worth looking at.
Folic acid, b12, zinc, magnesium and vitamin D are the vitamins with the most data supporting their use in depression.

Hi Linkadge.

How long after beginning zinc did you notice an improvement? I raised my dosage of Effexor to 450 mg/day about a week ago. I am feeling noticeably better, but this often happens to me immediately after a change in dosage. These improvements don't usually last for more than 3 days.

The one caviat with Folic Acid is that you should not take it if you are taking Lamictal. For some reason it will nullify the benefits (this was discovered accidentally in a study about Seroquel in 2016/2017).
Zinc is interesting to me but I'll probably wait until I'm back to a baseline before trying it regularly. (Still dealing w a cold)
Did you use regular grocery store variety Zinc or something like Zinc picolonate<sp?>

Usually I notice the effect of zinc within a few days. I don't take more than about 10-20mg.
