Can a laser cure depression?

Posted by Hugh on October 8, 2018, at 13:03:14

At his clinic in Denver, Theodore Henderson, MD uses TransCranial Laser Therapy to treat depression. Eighty-two percent of his patients have achieved remission. Here's a television appearance he recently made:

Harold Kraft, MD in Santa Monica, California uses an even more powerful transcranial laser than the one in Denver.

All I know is that after reaching remission with antibiotics following 20 years of failed psych meds and even failed ECT, you have to keep an open mind to unproven strategies. With that in mind, none of the drugs we currently take are proven to reach remission. As a matter of fact, most of them don't come anywhere close to remission.

So the best thing any long-suffering patient can do is open their mind to new things. Because it is obvious the older more-popular more-trusted more-practiced things are often disappointing.

I believe depression is primarily caused by unseen chronic low level infection and/or inflammation, with toxicity issues intertwined.

I can envision in my imagination how lasers might be able to disrupt, turn off, or kill low level infections in the brain, and how they might help improve inflammation. I cannot see in my imagination how a reuptake inhibitor of any kind could do any of that...though they are sometimes helpful for short-term acute situations, and sometimes (rare) provide remission for long periods of time.

I think the most important ingredient to reach remission is.....an open mind.

And I feel that circumstances in a person's life change for the better and they are then no longer depressed. Phillipa

36 of the 39 patients reported robust response, decreasing symptoms by more than 50 percent.

32 of 39 patients post-treatment QIDS scores indicated a remission from depression.

Overall, the QIDS score fell from 14.10 (+ 3.39) to 3.41 (+ 3.30)

Suicidal ideation resolved in all but two patients. Patients remained in remission for up to 55 months after a single post-course of treatment.

Patients saw benefit often within 4 treatments and resolution of depressive symptoms occurred within 4 weeks for some.

Fascinating. Do you think a well-established study team will take a look at this?

I wonder if there have been any "accidents".

Hi Scott,

These powerful lasers have been tested on animal cadavers. (I think a goat might have been one of them.) The light penetrated the skull and went several centimeters into the brain, and it did no damage to the brain tissue. What the laser does is protect the brain.

There is some danger of eye damage from these lasers. That's why people who receive this treatment wear eye protection.

I've spoken on the phone with Larry Morries of Neuro-Laser Foundation in Denver and with Harold Kraft, MD in Santa Monica, California. Both men were very helpful. Morries is working with Harvard on using lasers to treat depression.

In Denver, they like to spread out the laser treatments for depression, anxiety, TBI, and PTSD over a period of about eight weeks.

In Santa Monica, Dr. Kraft uses a laser that's more powerful than the one used in Denver, and he believes in using a shorter, more intensive treatment schedule. He conducts his treatments five times a week for two or three weeks. Kraft treats PTSD and TBI. I don't know if Kraft will treat people with depression or bipolar disorder unless they've also suffered a head injury. He told me that he'd treat my depression, since it could be related to two concussions I suffered as a child.

Here's a slide show about Dr. Kraft's laser therapy:

Very interesting presentation.
I got some "good vibe" reading it!
(You'll have to read thru the presentation to understand what I'm referring to)

That's interesting but I wonder if there are risks associated with the laser. One of my biggest problems is the inability to take care of myself. I resent cooking and that's why I eat out a lot and it's expensive and unhealthy. Of course they don't use organic food!

Here's an article about the Neuro-Laser Foundation in Colorado, where this treatment is available.
