I stupidly decreased my parnate dose a little and its now not working . I then increased to the max I could bear, and still not working. Has anyone stopped it and started again soon after, to see if it works better that way..... Im clutching at straws, but dont know what to do as I dont want to go back on Nardil.
All help appreciated. Im in UK and its so difficult to get any help or knowldge here.

I've twice stopped then started again, but I did not have this problem. It worked just as well when I started again. Mistake to have stopped first time. Became very depressed. The second time I stopped was because I was having major surgery and the anesthesiologist said I had to be off parnate for two weeks prior to surgery, - which was ridiiculous. I got to the post-surgery rehab and couldn't stop crying. They started up the parnate again and I was okay within 24 hours.

thank you so much for your response baseball. it was stupid of them to take you off for surgery. That was not at all necessary.
may i ask how long you were off it before you restarted? And how did you manage whilst you were off them ? I cannot be drug free, I become completely suicidal.
Im in UK and they are refusing me treatment on the NHS, and Im devastated. So have to figure out what to do, Any help you can give is appreciated. Re. how long you were off the medication, how quickly you got off, how quickly you got on, and how much meds you are taking. Thank you so much in advance.

I've never had any kind of discontinuation issues with anti-depressants, which I guess is not that common. I just stopped parnate (after several years), because I had bee feeling so much better for so long and didn't want to be on meds all my life. A coulee of months later, I became depressed and suicidal and landed in the hospital, where they started me again and I was okay wishing a week.
I have also been lucky in that parnate worked very quickly for me, both when I first started it and when I restarted it.
Why can't you get treatment on the NHS?

Did you taper off the parnate slowly, or quite fast? The reason I ask is because the fact that you felt suicidal 2 months later was probably due to the withdrawal from the parnate once it was completely out of your system. Naturally, you may disagree, but Ive been reading lots of articles about how difficult it is to come off antidepressants once youve been on them for a while. And you only find out when, like you. you are feeling good and think you dont need the meds any more..... and then comes the nasty shock.
That happened with me on nardil, even though I was decreasing under doctor's supervision. He quickly made me up the dose again. You are fortunate not to have experienced poop out. I had it on nardil after 20 years and it was a nightmare. Im now on parnate, and decreased the dose when I thought I was ok on it, and now it doesnt work, even though I have upped the dose to 40 mg which is all that I personally can stand.(originally 30 mg worked fine for 5yrs) I wonder whether certain people are more vulnerable to poop out than others.
Really dont know what to do. The NHS has cut funding for mental health drastically, and you have to be totally suicidal in order to get a psychiatrist. And all the good ones have gone private. It is a nightmare in the UK where we always used to depend on the NHS.
On top of that, only the maois have ever worked for me, though they do tend to make me hyper and 'high' which I dont like.
Have you ever done well on any other antidepressant?

I just stopped. Was fine for a couple of months, as I said. I'm not sure getting depressed and suicidal a couple of months later was withdrawal from parnate. I think it was just that I have chronic, recurrent major depression and parnate was keeping me fairly stable. Going off an anti-depressant turned out not to be a great idea.
I have had times when parnate didn't keep me stable. I found that if I take ability on an as-needed basis for a couple of weeks, I usually feel better within a few days. Ability was always worked like magic for me, but to take it regularly makes me gain tons of weight.
I'm sorry about the NHS. It seems, under May and the so-called "austerity" policy, there just isn't enough funding. I don't know why people are clamoring about Brexit rather than about the cuts to the NHS.
Good luck to you.

Thank you baseball. There is a thread on here about abilify turning people into gamblers https://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20190206/msgs/1103980.html
I mention it because nardil did the same thing to me.... I lost quite a bit of money while on nardil, Im now so scared of taking any drug.
Did abilify have that effect on you? Maybe you didnt stay on it long enough... Did you take it at the same time as parnate? Sorry for all the questions. Im at a loss as to what to do next, and very scared and anxious.

Yes I stopped very briefly and restarted with no problem. The reason I stopped was because I was getting manic and I didn't want to throw more fuel on that fire. Once I settled down, I started back up again no prob. Since I take Lithium it may be a little different though.
If I recall correctly (it's been a while) MAOIs worked differently before I got on Lithium.

Thanks SLS. It sounds as if you can stop and start these medications fairly easily, and manage to live and work without medication if you have to. Is that correct or just my interpretation ? I cannot function at all wihout medication, and only started taking it for that reason. Avoided meds my whole life until I had no choice. It would be very painful to come off the parnate for me and the whole situation frightens me enormously, having to depend on a drug for my mind to work properly. I found with both parnate and nardil, which are the only two Ive been on, that when they dont work, I just cannot think properly, and that is so scary. Can you describe what difference the lithium made? This new psychiatrist I have started with has suggested putting me on lamictal, if the higher dose of parnate works.... but I am scared to death of taking any more drugs than I have to....
