daytime prazosin side effects?

Posted by porkpiehat on November 27, 2018, at 14:56:47

Hey all...I restarted taking prazosin 1 mg last week at night to help improve my sleep...It nearly obliterates my constant nightmares and night terrors.

I also take gabapentin 100 mgs at night to improve sleep and boost mood and take away some of the numbing I get on Nardil (45mgs). I've been finding since adding prazosin at night I get a lot of of cramping and diarrhea, extreme tiredness the next day AFTER I take my morning meds (15mgs Nardil, 100mgs Lamictal, 50 mgs modafinil). Also in the afternoon I am getting physical anxiety like palpitations and throat tightening.

I have been following this morning schedule for a month now and had been getting a lift from it.

Maybe I just have a stomach bug, but I'm worried that they are withdrawl symptoms from the prazosin, which has a short shelf life, given that I'm taking something that boosts NE/NA (nardil).

I also take agmatine sulfate sometimes during the day, which acts much like clonidine in that in a complicated way it reduces peripheral adrenaline effects while increasing concentration in the higher brain...alpha receptors primarily.

Any one else familiar with prazosin side effects? I've been tempted to take 5mg of propranolol, which helps with physical and mental anxiety, and sometimes lifts the tiredness I get from NE activation (weird I know) but I dont want to play around with too many NE blockers (alpha AND beta)

Cheers

I take 10 mg of prazosin three times a day. It is more than just an anti-nightmare drug. It serves well to treat PTSD daytime anxiety and depression.

Currently:

Parnate 60 mg/day
nortriptyline 100 mg/day
Lamictal 300 mg/day
lithium 300 mg/day
prazosin 30 mg/day

I have been taking prazosin for quite a few years to treat bipolar depression. I have tried several times to discontinue it. Each time, my depression worsened rather quickly. It feels like a very clean antidepressant with one exception. It ruins my sex-drive. I am better with it than without it.

Hi Scott:

Were you taking Parnate, Nortrip, lamictal etc at the time you were also taking the prazosin?

Yes, and dizziness is not an issue - except for the first 12-24 hours. It is recommended that one begin Prazosin treatment by taking a single 1 mg dose right before going to bed. This is to avoid syncope. After that, you can increase the dosage at a moderate rate to 20-40 mg/day.

The dosage must be divided and taken three times a day.

I guess I ask because I'm wondering what symptoms were breaking through that were not treated by parnate, nortript, lamictal, lithium, etc?

I find that prazosin helps me with mental energy and mental clarity. It might not be as good for depressed mood. I can't be sure. It has a true antidepressant effect that, although inadequate for me, is nonetheless very clean except for a reduction in sex-drive. I have attempted to lower the dosage several times, but I deteriorated quickly. I would recommend giving it a try if you experienced childhood adversity in the form of chronic trauma, including physical abuse, psychological abuse, or neglect. Once called developmental PTSD, Complex Trauma Disorder is now an official diagnosis.

Prazosin is a rather benign drug. I haven't heard of any severe adverse reactions to it. Research it just to make sure.
