I'm glad the board is back up. I have been out of the loop for 2 years. During that time, have there been any new mood stabilizers or (especially) antidepressants that are safe to take with Parnate? I am insanely depressed, but I still think the Parnate is working and want to stay on it. I have tried most of the antipsychotics, but if there happens to be a new one that is particularly good for bipolar disorder (usually mixed), feel free to let me know.

hi. way back when, there were combo pills with a bit of Stelazine+Parnate. It was sort of like a non-addictive goof ball...the Parnate helped the depression, the Stelazine controlled agitation, anxiety, etc. I mean...when it worked, without too many problems...
the data on the 'atypical' vs 'conventional' tranquilizers is kind of mixed, confusing. perphenazine did well in the CATIE study, in people with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia. Its not as high potency as Stelazine, so more sedation, less EPS, less akathisia, but its higher potency than Thorazine, so less sedation, fewer anticholinergic effects, etc. I just mention perphenazine because its cheap, generic, and doesn't have the same level of metabolic ill-effects as many "atypicals."
loxapine is another 'conventional' neuroleptic that, at low doses at least, seems to have comparable tolerability to 'atypials.' if the dose gets too high, though, its not that much different from taking Haldol.
my former shrink recommended amoxapine. i declined, but...I kind of wish I'd at least tried it. Its a tca antidepressant that is partly metabolized into loxapine. the end result is help w/ some forms of low mood, plus the tranquilizer component. limited data seems to show that -if- one responds to amoxapine, response comes more quickly than with other antidepressants, which lines up with what's been observed with 'atypical'+antidepressant combinations.
when you say you're depressed, what sort of problems does your depression include? stimulants were once fairly common with parnate. I don't know if many shrinks go for that now, though. Ivan Goldberg had a webpage way back when...he wrote about using dexedrine and desoxyn a good bit in people on Parnate.
if you think a neuroleptic might help, maybe one of the new D2 partial agonists? Rexulti is approved for depression, I think.
I hope this helps a bit. good luck.

I'm currently having luck with Saphris (asenapine) for bipolar depression. It is an antipsychotic with antidepressant properties that you can take with Parnate.

yes there's saphris and lamotrigine, there both effective for treating depression, im not sure about abilify with parnate but it sounds ok, or safe but abilify is a D2 agonist, not sure if that would be the best with parnate.....olanzapine is good but its a heavy drug, and causes weight gain over long term use
lamotrigine doesn't have a direct antidepressant effect, but you will notice you won't be in the slumps while your on it, it helps with manic depression, mainly depression symptoms and stabilizes mood

Thanks to all of you for your ideas. It gives me quite a bit to research, and please keep adding if you think of more.
Thanks!
