N-acetylcysteine (NAC). While it is beyond the scope of this article to offer an intensive review of all agents, we do wish to briefly mention NAC, which affects the glutathione antioxidant system. In patients with BP, a subgroup analysis found that NAC led to remission of manic symptoms.30 Most studies, however, suggest that NAC has more robust effects on depressive symptoms.31

It can take 4-6 months for NAC to produce noticeable improvements in the negative symptoms of schizophrenia along with positive symptoms. NAC is also shown to improve depression in MDD and BD, but can take just as long to occur. I believe the dosages used have been around 2000 mg/day. I don't take it because it might accelerate metastasis of melanoma in high-risk individuals. I had several severe sunburns when I was younger.

Jeroen to answer what you asked Scott Metastatic Melanoma is cancer of the skin basically that has spread to other organs of the body. Usually via the lymph system. Phillipa

Jeroen,
My risk of getting melanoma skin cancer is pretty high because of my history of getting sunburns when I was younger. NAC doesn't cause melanoma. However, if I do get melanoma, NAC could possibly make matters worse by allowing the cancer to spread (metastasize) faster as described by Phillipa.
