I posted separately that I've been trying very low dose Trazodone to help with sleep issues. I'm also experiencing long term depression, but I cannot tolerate antidepressants, prescription or Supplements I've tried and even these very low doses of Trazodone are making me feel awful the next day. Others tried for depression include Tri-Cyclics (long ago), Zoloft, St John's Wort and 5HTP. Started with very tiny doses of 5HTP hoping to titrate up, but side-effects kicked in quickly. I start to feel foggy-almost fluey, an agitated type of anxiety, worsening depression and mood swings, often stomach upset. I am "not" Bipolar - the "swings" are from lower-moderate levels of Anxiety/Depression to suddenly more intense periods. I never feel euphoric or energetic.
Many years ago an MD I was seeing who had also studied Naturopathy and Homeopathy had me do a bunch of tests. One indicated that my Liver Phase 1 detox P450 enzymes were not functioning properly. I've wondered if that explains my low tolerance/extreme hypersensitivity. Or maybe my depression is being caused by issues other than the neurotransmitters affected by these meds.
I would love to hear experiences and ideas. I've also had a number of sessions with 2 Psychologists and 2 Naturopaths as well as my family Doctor.

If an A/D from the family doctor doesn't work for you, then you should start working with a psychiatrist. There are many meds and combos for anxiety and depression that you haven't tried.
One important thing to keep in mind is that some side effects lesson over time (a month or two), and most A/D's take about that long to have effects. So initially, you many notice nothing but side effects. It's important to stick it out for several weeks if you can, because things may improve.

I don't respond well to serotonin either. The same goes for norepinephrine. I took trazodone for insomnia. It would knock me out for about seven hours, but I'd feel groggy for much of the day.
The treatment that's helped me the most, long-term, is neurofeedback. I suggest reading A Symphony in the Brain by Jim Robbins.
Another treatment you might want to consider is Deep TMS. This is a newer form of TMS that penetrates far more deeply into the brain than standard TMS. JohnLA wrote this thread about his experiences with Deep TMS:

hmmm...maybe psych meds just aren't for you? The meds are best for severe problems, anyway. If you can find a non-drug approach to your problems, that's much better than dealing with the med-go-'round, trust me.
Maybe this is a blessing in disguise?
This is the end of the thread.
