SLS et al.....Lamictal (again!!)

Posted by jay_theoriginal1 on April 18, 2016, at 15:34:32

Thank you folks for your previous responses.

I have found taking the Lamictal once daily better than twice. I am only started on the 25mg dose. (Was doing 12.5 x 2 daily but not feeling much)Twice daily on 25mg and I get moody and angry and tense. Once, it is good for the morning for getting me up and going. I have read on a lot of forums people, particularly below the 200mg mark, taking it once daily. If it works, for me anyways, there is no harm in keeping it this way until higher doses, no?
Thanks....

Jay

I know at least one excellent psychiatrist who has her patients take Lamictal (original IR preparation) once daily. I told her that this kind of dosing leaves me feeling bad at the end of the dosing period.

I can't know for sure, but your negative reaction to the lower dosages may be startup side effects that will disappear completely as you continue to titrate upwards. I would not give up on Lamictal just yet.

Just to refresh my memory, what is your current diagnosis and treatment regime? Which drugs made you feel the best? Which drugs made you feel the worst? Perhaps this information can help others to make suggestions.

Hi, Jay. I was told to take 1 per day, and that dosage timing didn't matter. I've been taking it at bedtime, which is what I usually do unless I notice insomnia from a med.

I never tried twice per day dosage. The half-life is 29 hours, so that suggests to me that it's not important to dose multiple times per day like you might need to do with a shorter-acting med.

I'm on 150mg now, but pdoc had me titrate up 25mg every 2 weeks to help avoid the risk of the rash.

There is Lamictal XR. I imagine the drug company felt the need to produce an extended-release formulation for some reason. My personal experience with Lamictal is that I cannot go 30 hours without relapsing. I need to dose other drugs 3x a day, so splitting the dose is no big deal to me. I like to keep blood levels as steady as possible.

Remember - with anticonvulsants, a small difference in blood levels can mean the difference between response and non-response. I think that's why changing from the GSK name brand to the Teva generic caused me to deteriorate.

Hi Jay,

I do as Tabitha described. My max benefit to date is 200 mg. I was at 150 mg for maybe six months, and still having little emotional misery episodes, and when at 200 mg, I rarely rarely experience them. Knock on wood, I'm fairly steady.

Good luck.
