Abilify and insomnia

Posted by busub on March 30, 2016, at 12:13:24

So I started a trial of abilify a couple months ago and found that it worked really well on my mood (no more random dips) when paired with paxil. My mood is a lot more stable now but still find myself a little on the sad side of neutral, which I'm not too disappointed about. However, what's really been killing me is the insomnia. No matter what time I go to bed I wake up at 3am and fall back asleep off and on until my wake up time at 5:30am. As a result I'm tired through the day and sucking back caffeine to stay up. Is it worth sticking out and dealing with or should I be looking for a replacement?

Thanks.

Currently on 50mg Paxil CR and 2mg Abilify daily. Taken in morning. I've been looking at alternatives like Rexulti, but am intrigued by Buspar and its ability to possibly relieve sexual dysfunction that's been plaguing me by both the paxil and abilify. Anyone with experience?

PS, also find that it makes me gorge on food at night. No weight gain yet because I'm managing my intake during the day to allow myself to gorge at night.

I'm not sure, you might want to try the 5mg dose before deciding to discontinue Abilify. I took it for almost a year but in the end, it really wasn't helping, I was still depressed (and this was taken with lexapro so a similar combination) and tired all the time. I don't think I had insomnia...but I was also on sleep meds at the time like trazadone and some sort of benzo, I wouldn't be surprised if I would have had insomnia on Abilify if I hadn't also been taking the other medications. Abilify made me feel a little restless yet also tired and fatigued at the same time.

I don't have much experience on Buspar but SSRIs are notorious for sexual side effects, you're better off trying something different for depression, examples could be Wellbutrin, Remeron (mirtazapine) or Lamictal...

I never got any sleep with abilify. I took it 6 months, at doses between 2-15mg. As a result i didn't function at work and eventuly lost my job.

I would recommend Zyprexa ONLY if you can control your hunger. Zyprexa is awesome for my insomnia. I fall asleep easily, wake up easily. Awful for my waste line.

My former pdoc said that low doses of Abilify are more stimulating, higher doses more tranquilizing (her word: soothing. No joke). Makes sense, based on my own experiences. I take a whopping 30mgs/day in the AM. No noticeable sedation, no noticeable (to me) stimulation. However, if I don't take it by 1ish, I get insomnia. Abilify is a kinda strange drug.

If you can do without a neuroleptic, you probably should. I say this as someone who is on Abilify for the long haul. Its clean-ish, its tolerable, its great...if you need a neuroleptic. If you can find something else, please do. Many of the alternatives are cheaper, have more data behind them, and are safer in many respects.

Have you ever added Wellbutrin? I imagine you could keep the Abilify and add some form of Wellbutrin, if you don't mind a lil cocktail. Or drop the Abilify and then add Wellbutrin...I dunno, lol. It can help some people w/ the sexual se from ssri drugs. To me (I take wellbutrin sr), its sort of like...well, sort of like a very mild stimulant with some mood elevating properties. I find it far less dulling and apathy-inducing than many alternatives.

Hmmm....BuSpar sometimes helps people, Provigil and the older stimulants, Remeron. Have you ever tried Lamictal?
