Military plans to test brain implants

Posted by Meltingpot on February 21, 2016, at 11:49:32

Hi,

I was reading this article below. Is it too much to hope that maybe in five years time there will be such an implant which can detect when things are going awry in the brain and put it right? Or am I just wishful thinking

Intriguing. Not enough information, though.

Hi Scott,

What do you mean there isn't enough information? What sort of information is it that you want?

I do not reject the idea.

What is the hardware to be used (implant)? What are the parameters of charge application? What are the anatomical locations to be chosen? Are we looking at stimulation or disruption? Show me that you have a clue as to what, when, and where. 5 years? Currently, clinical researchers can't even agree on where to place the electrodes when treating depression. (There are at least three). DBS doesn't seem to work very well according to the most recent trials.

The article you cited is a brief summary article, not a scientific treatise. There is simply not enough information for me to follow this noble idea closely with the hope that it will materialize any time soon.

I hope I'm wrong.

Dont take risks that are too high, Scott. You may be even worse. There is always something to lose.

Probably no one will see this but here goes.

This thought permeates my brain every time I try a new med. Depression is bad enough. Why do we have to question each and every med trial ad nauseam?

Because we may be even worse and there is always something to lose. Cheers to those that can walk this tight rope and come out on the right side. We all deserve a medal.

No Lamdage, absolutely not! I was actually acknowledging that what you said is so true!! We must look at the risks as you said. We all have something to lose and some meds are just not worth it.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear :(
